dogwoods: how fussy about root disturbance?

Just planted a very small dogwood along with some shrubs intended as permanent underplantings. If one or two of the shrubs dies after the tree has begun to put on some size--say, 5 years down the road--will the tree be harmed if I remove the dead shrub and put in a new one? I've read that dogwoods are fussy about root disturbances.

I guess I want to know if there is some cutoff point beyond which I should assume that I can't do any planting at all beneath the canopy.
