Why no seeds on my maples?

Hi all,

I bought 2 sugar maple "sticks" from Stark Bros about 25 years ago. They are now about 40-50' tall and about a foot in diameter. But they have never made any seeds. Are they still too young?? Thanks.

That should be old enough. Maybe lack of a suitable pollen source? Are there plenty of other Sugar Maples around? Or maybe they are only producing male flowers?

of all my complaints about maples ... the seed problem is the worse.. lol ...

you ought to be doing a small jig .. that you dont have that god forsaken mess to clean up every year .....

why do you want them??

I have a Japanese red that has suddenly turned green. We rescued the tree from a big patch of large rhododendrons (it’s believed to be a “child” of a 27 year old tree next door and is about 8-9 ft tall, no idea of age.) I planted it in the corner of my specimen bamboo garden, isolated by a bottomless old trash can to keep out the bamboo. It is watered using a soaker hose buried under 3” of shredded/ground pine which also waters the bamboo. It was doing great until I fertilized using some Peters soluble mix using an injection system and the soaker hose. Is the fertilizer changing the color? Anything I can do or should I just leave it alone? We are in Hendersonville, NC. Tom B

Wow. You collected seeds off 5-6' Fire Dragon? The one I got seeds was from FD that's 8 ft tall or so. I have 14' FD and never saw a single seed. You need very little of Actinvate. I think it's like 5g (1 teaspoon) per 2g of water and 2 oz package is 56 grams. Can go a long way with it. Can use it on a lot of things. Are you familiar with Al's 5-1-1 mix from Container gardening forum? I learned everything about it from there. Very free draining seems to work the best for fast growth. Look for Lilly Miller fertilizer 16-8-12 from Lowe's. Once they're about 6 inches, risk of damping off is gone. I guess just have to be careful not to get the mix too wet like too much peat in the mix. That's why I'm going with Al's mix as it doesn't contain that much peat that would hold too much water. I had too many seedlings last fall so I put 6 or 8 of them by curb with the sign saying free shantung maple (3g size) and they were gone within an hour. If this was its first winter, then I suspect the culprit is cold damage. You are located in an area where Japanese maples are of borderline winter hardiness, you experienced what is the equivalent of a zone 4 winter this past season and Shishigashira is not considered to be as cold tolerant as some other JM's. Most authorities only list it to zone 6. I also have some concern about the planter box. In the last photo, it looks like the planter is resting on heavy duty landscape fabric and not in direct contact with the underlying soil. Is this why the tree was planted high? Not enough depth for the rootball? And no winter mulch? This definitely could have been a contributing factor. Need more details on the planter itself before suggesting whether replanting another tree makes sense.

I'm having the exact same problem too. I refaced my cabinets in 2018. The door frames are maple and the panel is MDF. No clue about any of this. The chipping started less than a year into it all, but it seemed like fairly immediately. The installer did come back and re-paint the doors that were chipped. Now, in 2021, the kitchen is so chipped, it's pretty embarrassing to even see. I wouldn't even be able to sell my house like this. I'm so sad. I'm wondering if they can be repainted by someone else, or are they irreparable. Is this a common problem?

We have alot of property, and wouldn't mind more trees growing up everywhere.
I've never seen flowers on these 2 trees either. We do have other sugar maples. In fact, we have this one that puts out tons of seeds, but she's about 100 years old at least, and is on her last leg.
We call her "grandma". "Grandpa" fell over a couple years ago.
Shouldn't we be seeing flowers at least?? Is it possible they are sterile??

I'm just curious why 25 year old trees aren't making seeds yet. We live out in the country on 33 acres, and I love trees.........so I don't mind seeds at all. The wildlife love to eat them too. I don't keep a golf-course-style lawn. I love seeing everything grow.......even weeds, because its part of the circle.
Now talk about invasive japanese honeysuckle, and my BP goes up.

I can't believe how many seeds all my red maple are putting out this year! Its unbelievable. On one of my trees, I thought all the leaves had turned brown and it was dying.......but it was just so covered with seeds! I have several that have never put out seeds before, and now they are covered with them.
I guess I should be careful what I wish for! ;)

Everything on this end of the world seemed to seed like crazy this year. I have so many Pin Oak seedlings popping up in the yard that you would think I owned one. I am about halfway tempted to take a shop vac to the Box Elder before it drops seed. In all the places I have lived I have never seen so many seedlings growing everywhere.

From what you report, the reason you have no seeds is because you have no flowers. Why there are no flowers can be guessed at, but for practical purposes cannot be proven, so don't expect any useful ideas!
