Judges' Clerks

Those of you who are judges and any one that has been a clerk in the past - what are the tasks and responsibilities and how knowledgeable must one be about violets and the other gesneriads and the AV show in general to be a judges' clerk? Would it be a good learning experience?

I've been an international judge for over 20 years.

A judges' clerk walks about 3 feet behind the judges.

Make no comment about what you think about the plant.

Your job is to take orders from the judges such as go get the Show President to settle any placement problem.

You MAY have to replace a plant that might be in the wrong section or the Show President may do it herself/himself.

You may be asked to write comments on the back of the card but most often the judge will do this then give you the card.

One of the judges' clerks places the ribbons, the other is there mostly to aid the judges.

This is a tremendous learning opportunity. You can listen to the judges' comentary but do not offer your own.

I think I understand the difference between show and award judging. This show I am speaking of will be doing both. They state that by entering your plant you agree to pay the AOS fee for an award should you receive one, and that other prizes in addition. I will be entering my plants in one or two other shows that according to the society are "just for fun" shows so I look forward to that. Now only one is in bloom now but about 10 others are spiking so who knows which one will have bloomed by that time or still in bloom. It will be exciting for a couple reasons, first off I have never had this many in spike and hopefully in bloom. And I have never taken orchids to a show. So I will be getting them in at least one of them.

I think most of the posts are interesting rather than irrelevant, but I was frankly doubtful about this one. Mine was the seventh number called; calling the numbers took just long enough for me to note the first 6 numbers were all people who had requested to be excused. Of course, that was just a coincidence. At that particular portion of the pre-selection, before hearing the individual requests to be excused, the judge had repeated what was in the info packet, that there were *very* few acceptable reasons to be excused -one example was of having made reservations [in advance of being called to duty] for an unusual and expensive trip, and even that example was qualified as to being at the judge's discretion as whether it would be an adequate excuse. I have no idea why I wasn't accepted; now that it's all over, I'm more relieved than disappointed although I think the case is likely to be very interesting. My favorite neighbor was with the DC police dept; after retiring she took a job working for a private investigative firm. She reminded me of that while I was commenting that so many of the available jurors were in law enforcement. I have no idea if it's done often or in many places, but she tells me that when a master list of potential jurors is selected, they are investigated for stuff like having a criminal record (that's what she did for the firm), prior arrests, and so forth. I guess that may explain why the judge seemed to be aware that *everyone* was familiar with computer usage, and maybe also explains the high percentage of sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, FBI, police officers and state troopers among the jurors called.

Very nice blog page and pictures. We had our show in Augusta last Saturday too. Flower entries were down this year with a lot more emphasis on the design portion (arrangements). I think it also has a lot to do with the very hot temperatures this last week (100 +/- 2 every day since last Monday), no rain, and watering restrictions. My garden is starting to dry up! As for Enchanting Esmerelda, it is a very bright pink with a little lighter eye zone. I must admit that mine didn't look quite right last week either in the heat - - even early in the morning it was looking a little 'fried.' Here is a picture of what it looked like last year when things were a little more normal. Now that you have been to a show, you should plan to enter some flowers next year. Just don't be too certain which ones you want to enter because it all depends on what is blooming on that particular morning and which scape you are willing to sacrifice. Another thing you might want to try is being a clerk for the judging. That way, you can hear all the comments on each flower and learn what the judges are looking for. Sometimes it is not the prettiest flower that wins, but the one that has been "groomed" to be the best. Besides, we all have opinions on what is prettiest - and so do the judges. They are trained to look at each entry as an individual item they are judging against standards, not on how much they like a certain flower or color. Volunteer work...do you? how did you decide?

I was a crisis counselor for sexual assault in the past and did children's advocacy in law school. I applied for CASA training through my last employer and a program where they said they were wanting to facilitate community involvement, but when it came time for training, they wouldn't let me take the hours away from work to do it. ??? I always thought I would get back to that after the boys were grown, but I stayed busy volunteering in the schools while they were home. My dad passed at the end of my youngest's senior year in high school and I handled the estate, so I am just now starting to think about whether that is still something I want to do. I recently read that they have an advocate for every child in our county but still want volunteers for future additions, so the need would probably not be high demand. DH is about to go half-time at work and ease into retirement. We talked about possibly doing Habitat when that day came, but we haven't discussed it recently. I like to do wall finishing and painting. Not sure if I would be good at much else, but would be willing to try. I volunteer with an arts support group and will probably get involved in their children's outreach program and possibly ushering at events. Right now I have eased into the scholarship committee which only meets about half the year. I have one director who would like to try to get a fine arts and performing center in our area and has suggested that if I get bored. I know someone who might be able to help corral the right people and she's leaving another position at the end of the year. That would be a major undertaking, but I would love to see it happen. That will at least be a conversation or two to test the waters. As far as working with the elderly, I would second the comment above. You are not likely to be stuck doing things you are not comfortable with and there are many levels of elder care -- from independent senior living to assisted living and memory care. You could pick one of the more independent settings. So many of them just love having someone to talk to.

Hi Mac,
Being a clerk is a great opportunity to listen and learn about violets. You can glean a lot of info from them on how they think the plant has been grown. You can also learn a lot by listening in when judges do design. Your job is to be a gopher for the judges. They may ask you to move a plant or pick it up and turn it. They may also ask you to check the description with entries and classification if they think something is wrong. In which case you would speak to the entires chairman or classification chairman and find an answer. You must be quiet at all times and speak only when you are asked. Don't hover behind them too closely. If they feel you are too close they will let you know. But.....on the whole I think you will find that most judges are only too willing to let you hear what they are saying. Above all, relax and enjoy the experience.

Fred--Did I hover to close when I clerked for you last year at Central Jersey? Thinking back, I don't remember keeping a distance (or anyone telling me to)
Also, are you judging Central Jersey again this year? I'll be down for it, photographing with Lenny.

Thanks for responding Fred. I was thinking you were a judge. This does sound like a great opportunity as Nancy mentioned to learn more about violets and exactly what judges are looking for in a "Show" plant. I just wasn't sure what experience one must have to clerk, but you make it sound as though I could handle it.

I'm excited about the show in Raleigh, if they are in need of clerks I think I may sign up, all though my club all ready seems to be very actively in charge of placement and hospitality, BUT I WILL make time for the commercial sales room! LOL Can't wait. Wish you all were going.

Hi Mac,
I don't know if they have scheduled all the people for clerking duties at convention yet, but if you can I would try to get in touch with someone to see if they need more people to clerk. If not try clerking at your local club when you have a show. I wish I were going to be there also but I am saving my money for next years convention which will be in Cherry Hill, NJ. It's about a 30 minute drive for me to get there and thats in traffic.
Yes Anne Marie, I will be in Central Jersey judging and no you weren't standing too close. Are you entering any plants? I will see you there on the 25th.

Nope I'm not entering anything I don't think, but who knows, if I have something that looks "passable" I might bring it along 'cos word is that it's gonna be a sparse show... Lenny might have some good stuff to enter tho!
