Just keep them barely moist. No wicking. 50 is too cold for a prolonged period of time. May be you can put a small space heater. Another suggestion - if they are on lights - keep the lights at night instead of day - since they give just a bit of warmth. Donna, thank you so much. I thought about doing just what the link says to do, but since I've never done anything like that I thought the plant would die because of having no roots. I am going to do what the link says, step by step. I just need to find a clear covering for it. The pot I have it in is about 6 or 8 inches in diameter and about 4 or 5 inches deep. I'm going to wash the pot out and use fresh soil. I printed the page out. I am so thankful that you responded to my post. You know, I only paid about 2 bucks for the plant when it was in a 2" pot. I have transplanted it several times going to a slightly larger pot each time. I don't know how the neck got so long except that I never shortened it and I guess it just kept growing and growing. After the cat knocked it down I tried to repot it, but the long neck wouldn't go into the pot so I just put as much into it as I could. It kept flowering, but something told me this still was not a good thing. So, thanks again. I'm sure I'll get this plant back to a good state of health...thanks to you. the key last about a year then you just have to do what you did and get a new key and insert it, it does get the virus definition updates automatically daily, it can be set in the settings to also auto update the program too other wise it will pop up saying there is one and she has to ok it, now with a big version update like the current one from 4.8 to 5 that has to be done manually by going to the site and downloading the new one and installing it just like it was done originally and a new key will have to be installed. However you do not have to rush and get version 5 because they will continue support for 4.8 for quite a while. to change the settings in it to have it get everything she can automatically go to the avast ball in the systray right click and select settings in teh avast settings box click on update(basic) on the left that will open your options in there you want to set both of those options to automatic, virus database and program then click ok. Now you do have to do a full scan manually but with avast that is not really as needed as other programs since it scans everything continually. But what I do is set the screen saver up in scan mode and leave my computer setting with the screen saver running and just let it scan, to do that go to the desktop and right click choose properties and go to the screen saver tab, look through the list of options and select avast then you can click on settings to select which screen saver to set for avast to use just pick a simple one so it won't use much resource (I use starfield i think) leave everything else as it is set, you can change how long to wait till the screen saver comes on if you want. click ok apply and now anytime the pc sits long enough for the screen saver to come on it will automatically begin doing a scan and will continue till done if un interrupted, if interrupted it will begin from where it left off the next time. there is a method to set up the windows task manager to run a scheduled scan also if you want those directions let me know I can link them

The problem is with the soil and not the plant. You need to pour water below the plant leaves and thoroughly drench the soil. Make sure the water is pH neutral or slightly acidic--absolutely no alkaline water (if not sure just use room temperature bottled water for now). Then go out to your nearest gardening store to buy a bag of african violet pottling soil and one bag of perlite (can also buy it online). Then mix 1/2 cup of soil with 1/2 cup of perlite and repot this plant. You'll need to completely soak the current soil, so you can pry it off gently and pot the plant in the new, better quality soil. A watering cord/wick can also help maintain perfect moisture for the plant. Good luck!
