Decobug/Others--Your purple opinion please

I am looking to replace a Fragrant Plum rose that died. I liked it ok, but would like to try another purple in that spot. When I was searching HelpMeFind, I noticed every purple had a picture by Decobug. Can you help me? I'm looking for a HT or Floribunda with scent. Not a Mauve, as it will be next to Lady X. I'm in Willamette Valley Oregon-Zone 8 and do spray. Some I'm considering are Ebb Tide, Royal Amethyst and Melody Parfumee.

I don't know where you are in zone 6, but here on the border of zones 4 & 5 in central NH pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) is an easy plant in our acid, very fine sandy loam, growing to 5-6' in 4 years and topping out at around 20'. I have several growing in full sun and a bunch growing in part sun, all of which do very well. The ones growing in full, dense shade struggle and have rather sparse blooms. I find it a plant of multiseason interest, and it's one of my favorite plants. In spring it has those lovely blooms for about 10 days and then the berries develop from green through shades of red to a deep, almost black purple on brilliant red stems. In August the tree is filled with birds eating the berries, and at this time of year it turns a variety of colors ranging from chartreuse to yellow and peach to reds and red-purple, depending on the tree and the particular year. In winter the branch silhouette against the snow is quite elegant. As far as I know there aren't any selections with green leaves; those are all seed grown. I know of two selections with variegated leaves: Golden Shadows AKA 'W. Stackman' which has yellow and green leaves, and 'Argentea' AKA 'Variegata', which has white and green leaves. Both tend to grow much more slowly than the green ones. I have had three small Golden Shadows for 3 growing seasons and they have only about doubled their original size in that time. If you visit the Garden Web forum for your area and do a search for both pagoda dogwood and Cornus alternifolia, you may find that others in your area have already shared opinions on how this plant does in your area. I grow many of the older Austins. In fact, I find myself to have an affinity with, if not a prefernce for some of the earlier English roses. My rose garden is just starting to bloom in the past two days. Many of the earliest blooming roses are the older English roses. The reds seem to be all opening, including; The Squire, Prospero, Wenlock, William Shakespear (Original) and William Shakespear 2000. One thing you can do, plant things that grow fast.Bananas and cannas come quickly to mind in your zone, especially bananas and cannas with fancy leaves like zebrina banana, and tropicana, or pretoria canna, or any of the red leaved varieties. And space them a little further apart. Fill in the gaps with cheap annuals for a few years. A crepe myrtle might be a good plant to take up some room/provide some bloom. Daturas and brugmansias are pretty cheap too. I'd recommend some of the amaranth family plants. They will reseed themselves, some of them are red and tall,some are tricolored, some like the "love lies bleeding" have nice dangly hanging ropey tassels, and they will all fill in quickly. Another good one is the perilla frutescens. This is another one you can grow from seed (it will take over, though!) and it will provide a good deep purple color.It can take sun but looks like a tall dark purple coleus, up to 36" tall.cut and paste this link in your browser. I planted it a few years ago, it drops seed and comes back and you can transplant it and thin them out so that they aren't so crowded. I'd add a few hibiscus too. They will soon take up a lot of room. On a sad note, I don't like the "after" picture. It looks too artificially lined up and not "jungly" enough for those kind of plants. Also, it's overplanted. When those plants grow, it will be just a solid block of leaves. Delete about one third of those plants to allow for growth, which is also good for your budget! and stagger planting lines and make it look more natural. Also plant tropical looking annuals in odd numbers, to fill in for the meantime, for best effect. New guinea impatiens, celosia, nemesia, sun coleus varieties, ornamental sweet potato vines. Variegated spider plants (airplane plants) from hanging baskets make great temporary filler plants near sidewalks for borders and are so cheap. There are surely lots of others that your consultant can recommend for your area. Plant bananas and cannas singly since they multiply so rapidly. Gingers will multiply fast too. The large basjoo banana clump in my picture in the link below is only three years old, and that's in Indiana, so you can see you will need to allow at least 7-8 feet for a clump size in three years.I only planted one 9" plant. It is better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. I speak only for myself, but for the most part (with the exception of emergencies, and IMO absolutely nothing in decorating is truly an emergency), this is a really effective way to p*ss me off. Over the years, I have discovered that I can assuage my DH's desire to have input by narrowing the choices and asking him to choose the best out of 2-3 options (all of which I like). He gets to choose, I get what I want, we're both happy. :) Works same way in our house, I do the research and narrow down to a few options, all of which I like just fine, because he gets overloaded and grumpy. He is actually REALLY into this particular house and wants to be in on everything to some degree, and he's fanatically fussy about color (his mother was an artist and he practically absorbed color theory in utero). Sometimes, though, the things that he chooses out of the options I've given him are SO not what I would expect and are somehow just the ticket, so even after 14 years he can still surprise me. F'rinstance, the embroidered purple silk drapes ended up not working in our LR (*sob*) so I went to Country Curtains and loaded up on swatches. Frankly, I took one of everything that I thought would go with the rug we have, even some rather iffy ones, knowing how colors change in different lighting conditions. I unthinkingly left them on the coffee table, planning to weed them down later, and that evening entered the room to find DH going through them. He chose two options - both of them from my "dubious" category - for the LR AND BOTH WERE PINK (okay, more salmon-y, but they're still pink, d@mmit), and LACE for the DR! LACE, I tell you! I don't have them yet because of budgetary shufflings, but the CC clerk encouraged me to purchase-and-return and peculiar choices they may be, they're spot on. So instead of the more Victorianesque eggplant/olive/deep gold I had planned we're actually heading more toward an Edwardian/Aesthetic Movement salmon/sage/light mustard - still saturated (I loathe pastels) but not as dark. Verrrrry interesting.

All purple roses are listed as mauve...

The closest in color on your list to Fragrant Plum is Royal Amethyst... I don't grow this one...

Melody ParfumeÃ© is also close in color in the beginning, but only at a point, then it fades to be close in color to Neptune... so it's basically a bi-color bush at that point... It would match Lady X in color, but the bush does get tall and is very vigorous...

Heirloom is hands down the best medium purple for those that spray... Others love Angel Face but I always liked Heirloom better...

Intrigue is one of the best dark magentas...

I have Shocking Blue and Love Potion as my medium purples, however, they are taking their sweet time in getting established so I can't recommend them as yet...

For my lilac purple I have Neptune and love it and recommend it. It's 40 years older than your Lady X... and a little more 'blue'

Another lavender I have and recommend is Cotillion (Perfume perfection) but it also takes a while to get up to speed, and the bunches of blooms are small, not HT form...

Ebbtide is low and slow... The couple of dark magenta fading to purple blooms are gorgeous, but it would be several years before you would have an entire bush in bloom...

Midnight blue is a round ball of constant bloom, dark dark purple, beautiful color. Blooms fade fast to black and should be removed daily, but right now there are about 50-100 per bush, so I don't mind. I have 5 of these bushes...

Purple Heart is a sweet bush, the color of Intrigue and Burgundy Iceberg, but the blooms are very fragile... The bush gets wider than Intrigue, and the bloom form is more OGR than HT form

WS2000 has dark crimson blooms but a lot of complaints about the bush being a crab. I don't mind because the fragrance is so perfect... and the flowers, the blooms are breathtaking...

I can't say anything bad really about the 3 that you are considering... If you were to buy them already growing from a local nursery so that you could see them and smell them that would be a good thing...

Ebb Tide will be a nice dark purple and a good contrast. But the flowers are smaller and don't last long. I like mine and get a ton of blooms from it. My favorite of the darker purples is actually The Prince. It is an Austin rose that is a lovely dark purple color. It smells better, has larger flowers, and lasts longer than Ebb Tide.

I decided to move Ebb Tide to a location last night that will get more shade... Hopefully the blooms will last longer and not gray-out so quickly...

I was just out photographing my Ebb Tide this morning! I am in zone 5, she gets the bare minimum of sun, and she is a brand-new bareroot planting this Spring. She has two fully open blooms and several buds, as well. The blooms opened aa little magenta-y, but by the next day were much darker purple. The first bloom kept her petals and colors even through last night's rain. It has been open three days now, and has not yet "grayed" although it is slightly faded, now. Smells wonderful.

I am still processing the photos (I take large RAW files) but I will get them posted soon.

Okay, both these blooms are slightly more purple/less magenta than they appear...I tried to color-correct to "real-life" as closely as I could. The difference in color between blooms is pretty accurate .

The bush itself is already about two feet high from bareroot this Spring, and I got two nice new basals from it, as well. There are about six more buds.

Thanks you guys! I especially love the pictures. I am going to help me find right now to look up your suggestions. I probably won't plant anything until I order bareroot for early spring. I may spend some time at the garden center looking and smelling though. Thanks again.

May I suggest The McCartney Rose? It's unbelievably fragrant. About the only criticisms might be a slightly low petal count and a tendency to cluster. Other than that, it has to be one of the best HT's in existence right now. It seems almost completely impervious to Black Spot. Only Knockout comes as close as one of these for disease resistance, IMHO. Very vigorous, pure rich-pink blossoms (you said not mauve again) and even drought-resistant. It's one of the most fragrant in my gardens and I have almost every Gamble Medal winner. It hasn't won, yet - but will, I think. It's more fragrant than Fragrant Plum, for instance.
