most beautiful rose opinion?
Comments (33)I think Nymphenburg is almost like an orange/apricot tinged light pink, more lax Cardinal Hume. However, I've read Nymphenburg is prone to be taller than wide. I've only seen it in person once, but it just struck me as a beautiful total package. I've only had Cornelia for about 6 months now, but I would say Cornelia is a little purer pink, just lightly kissed by apricot. Cornelia will probably be more spreading if not controlled. Unfortunately, I dont yet grow Felicia. I've seen Felicia treated like a large Floribunda in pictures, but only much larger billowing shrubs in person. The flowers seem more similar to Felicia in that they are not small clusters on an inflorescence, but often singly borne blooms of moderate size. Some were a pail pink not too far off Felicia's usual tone, while others were wildly different. I like the variability. I didn't catch its fragrance, but I was simply very impressed by the display a mature Nymphnburg put on. Many different tones within the orange, salmon, and pink spectra were all present in the blooms on what was a shapely, well foliated plant. I primarily enjoyed how healthy, how cheerily colorful, and how shapely Nymphenburg was. The full shrub shot on HMF from the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden is quite close to how I recall the shrub appearing in habit and quantity/quality of blooms. The one I saw was maybe 5' x 3.5' or 4'. Comments (41)I don't get the slamming of Knockout either. Do people refer only to the original or to all of the sports and follow-ons? I had plenty of teas and other roses when I planted Blush Knockout, including some with very simple blooms like Lyda Rose and Darwin's Enigma and Pleasantrie and I was quite happy with the Blush KO. Matter of fact, of that particular group, it's the only one I still have. As to what's available in stores, I don't shop in stores for roses, so I have no idea. However, I would think it's better to have those available than most of the hybrid teas and floribundas that have been sold over the years that require constant spraying. Actually, I do have a single nomination for most overrated rose - Peace. Grows well in dry desert. Otherwise defoliates within hours. Chicago Peace has the same problem but on top of that it's ugly. I made the mistake of planting those a number of years ago. Gone....See MoreYour opinion of Claire Austin
Comments (47)Completely agree.... sadly. The perfume and colour are lovely BUT the stems are too flimsy to hold very densely petal-packed heads which flop and just when, hopefully, coming to full opening, shatter with the slightest motion... same when picked. I have devised a system of putting plastic mesh (protective sleeves for glass wine bottles) around my shallow vases with the mesh over the rim to be able to poke short blooms in vertically. I asked the David Austin rep at Hampton Court Flower Show who said that CA needs to be planted in a place where you can see the blooms from underneath. I would also add that tying every stem and branch helps. I have eco-planted bamboo behind it now and strap-tie the rose with the green bamboo leaves which also makes a good pattern and colour backing to distract from the blackspot leaves and highlight the blooms of 'Cussid' Claire. I bought one for my friend who had better luck by keeping hers in a v. confined metal structure on a hillside garden! Her comment on the rose was 'inbreeding and style over substance'....See MoreWhat are your most prolific Austins? OR similar style non-Austin?
Comments (29)THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who has replied so far, This has been very helpful. I love that so many of you took he time to reply, and I also am excited to hear that I already have a few of the varieties that are mentioned here- some multiple times (Golden Celebration, Lady Emma, Darcy Bussell, Jubilee Celebration) they are still so young I haven't been able to tell anything about their blooming habits for sure yet. AnnTn, I live in a suburban area very close to an urban downtown area, so my yard is pretty small, I don't have room for many giant species of rose (although I'm constantly trying to make more room) my soil is heavy, sticky clay, but my flower beds have been amended so many times, I don't know how much of that is still in there, and if my hydrangeas are any indication it is very alkaline. Most of my available space at the moment is mostly sun with some dappled shade, but as soon as the sidewalk that is In planning stages gets built, I will build my fence, and then I will have more full sun space available, but I'm waiting until the sidewalk and fence are done to plant near the very front of my yard (some of the sunniest territory) I don't want the roses to get messed with during the construction process, I would hate to get into an altercation with a construction worker ;)...See MoreRelated Professionals
