Dandy Pot wholesale for kids planting violet leaves??

My freind belongs to a Violet society & they are going to have 4h'ers come & plant a violet leaf. My daughter saw some they had in a thing called a dandy Pot. She loved it. The group would like to give a dandy pot to each kid to use but at retail they are too expensive. Most of the group is older & have only bought at a retail store & do not use a computer. I told them I would check . Okey I told them no problem I would be able to look it up on the internet & have that info in no time. I can not find dandy pot wholesale info anywhere. I have done a ton of google searches & only found a few retail sites. My friends group will need several dozen for the kids. If anyone knows where I should look for dandy Pots wholesale I would be so greatful. There next meeting is the first sat. of April & I would like to be able to give them some price ranges if possible. many thanks one2growon

My experience with wholesale is this:

I live in a large city, Montreal. There is a business who sells products mostly to farmers. But you must buy in quantity.

That means I bought 1,000 four-inch pots--at a greatly reduced price, but there you have it.

I don't think you will be able to find these wholesale. I think you could ask the kids to pay a few dollars inscription fee which would cover the cost of the pot, soil and anything necessary.

I believe there are several which carry dandy pots. Just write it up on a search. I think Cape Cod Violetry in Mass. carries them.

You could also use Dixie drinking cups.

Thank you, I have searched & searched for the manufacturer that makes & sells the dandy pots to Garden centers but it escapes me. They will probably have to use dixie cups. Maybe they can have a few dandy pots out & give the kids the option of using the free dixie or buying the dandy pot at the groups retail cost. I have a business & tax number & could order & store the extra's for them. I'm sure the group would divide up the extra's & buy them at cost themselves to fill a larger order but I just can not find the info. One in the group is going to a flower show this weekend & will look for the info. The internet has never let me down before. thanks again.

When Dandy Lion was a kitten, she knocked an old, small, very fragile zuni pot off the shelf and broke it. A friend gave it to me years ago. I tried to make another one. I could coil the clay (cone 10 stoneware) using puki pots. I could scrape and sand it very thin and fire it in the Weber BBQ. That worked fine. I have some very nice little pots, ( not as nice as the zuni but passable.) I could do the corde seca (black lines) but I couldn't get a nicely colored glaze at a pit fire temperature. I am going to try iron, cobalt, terra sig and some other glaze ideas this summer to try to make 4 more cache pots for violets. Pottery is fun. Could you post some of your pots? I am not certain what the rules are for businesses but it would be interesting to see some of your work

You can buy minis from the fancier garden centers. Depends on where you live. A store called Orchard Supply has minis. You can go to the Flower Mart in a nearby major city. That is where the wholesale sellers go. They will usually have a section for "The public " to buy a few plants. You can go to a florist near a location where there are office buildings where people sit in tiny cubicles all day. Such florists have great demand so they stock minis. Finally, you can place an order with actual growers if minis such as Lyndon Lyon and Violet Barn in upstate New York . Their minis are more likely to grow just one plant that does not sucker. Optimara brand is more likely to sucker and grow multiple crowns because minis have trailer genes . So , if you have limited space, then buy just one or two or three minis from either Lyndon Lyon or Rob 's Violet Barn. Other high quality minis that don 't sucker were developed by Kent Stork but are harder to find. Also, George MacDonald. You can also get small standards and semi minis if you have limited space . The plants often cost the same or more as standards. If money is an issue, buy leaves and be prepared to wait. If a mini gets older and you move it to a bigger pot, it will probably grow larger leaves . If you buy minis in a local retail store, they will be Optimaras. In my experience , they eventually grow three crowns that I then have to divide. If you order on line, read the fine print to see if it says "grows symmetrically." Then it won 't sucker or spread out. More info than you wanted ... Joanne

The older ladies in our violet club have used the dandy pots for years and just love them. I did not like them much. I think the colors were too bright maybe and the top was dark and the bottom see thru color? Didn't have a problem with them being too wet. I liked how easy it was to fill the resouvour and to see that it was empty or low of water. I will say that the oyama pots are the best for me. I have too many plants to grow everything in them, but my plants love them, the roots grow right out the bottom of the top pot. I highly recommend them. The drawback is not being able to see when the water is low as the lower part is the same solid color as the top, which looks better to me. Cape Cod Violetry sells both I think, I don't know if they are the best price or not. tish

Hey Toni, thanks for your complements on my plants. Beleive it or not, all of my plants with the exception of the Aussie FIngerlime have been grown from seed. As a matter of fact, the Grapefruits were personally selected and liberated by me :) . I was out in AZ at the end of 2001, I was out for a evening drive with my wife and sister in law, we went to the highest point in Phoenix, then on the way back I passed a former manson with a radio station billboard on it with some sort of event going on at the grounds. It had a semi circular driveway and the entire very large front lawn was fileld with quite old Grapefruit trees, all seemingly the same type. When I went 3/4 of the way around I stoped said what the hell, jumped out looked at a nice looking tree and picked 2 grapefruits off the tree, the biggest and best ones I could find, and tossed them into the car. I had to wait 1.5 months for the box for some reason to come back to NY that I shipped em in but they were intact and whole. I had the seeds of one of the grapefruits planted for me by a friend and co-worker, since he had better facilities and room for that. Once they gre we split up the bunch. I kept 3 seedling and the other 2 went with him. I think he has one tree left. The other 3 have been growing with me ever since. Grapefruits #1 & 2 were so close together that I decided no to seperate them, they seem sto be doing great otherwise so it has never been a worry. The Key Limes were a bit simpler. Basically I bought a bag of "Susie" Key Limes in 2004, made a key Lime pie, saved the seeds, 15 seedlings grew. I lost 10 of them when I went away for 5 days and the pot they were in was not watered while I was gone. I planted the remainnig 5. One died in a month, another died suddenly of mysterious leaf loss the next year. Now of course I had a Key Lime almost die of the same mystery. The Lemon was planted September of 2005. I palnted 6 seeds,only 1 came up. I thought I had a second plant but it turned out initally to look like a weed. I figured I would let the weed keep the lemon company for a while. I was almost ready to pull the weed and then it flowered, then about a month later I found a whole bunch of small thai peppers growing on it...lol. It was a seedling for when I planted some in the same pot 2 years previous. As you can tell I just stuck the seed in existing dirt. The Kumquat I bought at the local Stop and Shop in December of 2005 and got 2 seedlings from that. I will be transplanting them soon. The Aussie FIngerlime I bought from a place in South Carolina. I will be looking up the name of the place when I get to work tomorrow. Anyway that is my story, so no grafts except on the Aussie, all is from seed. VTY -Mark

Our violet club ordered pots from a place that only sells to vendors and clubs. Had to buy a case but I think there were 12 or 18 in a case, and it came to about $5 a pot for the 4" size...the 2" size was closer to $3 I think. If I find out the name of the company, I will email you. tish

You could always use the Oyama selfwatering pots.

www.avplanters.com abit cheaper than dandy pots.

Most growers use plastic pots due to cost.

I too wanted some dandy pots but won't pay the high price.

I made a couple nice pots with pvc pipe cut to 1 1/2" glued a bottom on it and put a leaf support ring (a round disk) on the top. I drilled holes around the peralite layer and punched one hole on the bottom. Texas Style watering. I painted the whole thing green and it looks killer! Picture an upside down top hat.

For a recycling idea, I've recently been taking the clean empty Yoplait yogurt cups (they are sort of shaped like a cone) and cutting the top off a little, maybe a little less than 1/2 inch, or just below the ridge. The 3 oz solo cups fit right in the top, cut the yogurt cup a little too high up and the solo cup sticks up too far and cut it too low and the solo cup falls in, so cut it just right...it isn't hard once you've done one. I paint them and they make great self watering containers with the wicked 3oz solo cup.
