My guesses - the taller sedum that has fallen open is likely S. kamtschaticum; I would go with S. spurium for the red one, and the one on the right is likely S. floriferum (maybe 'Weihenstephaner Gold'). There are a bunch of sub-species and look alikes in this genus!

since you say it's just starting to bloom yellow now, could very well be Sedum
'Aizoon' (see below). . .are the stems about 10"-12' tall (long, if flopping)?

Thanks to both of you for your help. After looking at the link carl18 posted, I don't think the big one is Sedum Aizoon, it does not have burgandy stems. The stems are green with a brown shell coating near the base.

I think you may both be right about the smaller one as S. kamtschaticum 'Weihenstephaner Gold' aka var. floriferum. I guess I'll see what the bloom looks like to verify.

As far as the red one, I am not sure if it is Fuldaglut or Dragon's Blood. I understand the difference is slight between the two of them since Fuldaglut is a selection of Dragon's Blood. But at least I know I am probably in the right ballpark.

I agree on the kamschaticum and the Weihenstephaner Gold IDs. I've had both for several years, and still can't spell Weihenstephaner Gold, lol. (I did a lot of cutting and pasting from above posts, lol)

Sorry, can't help with the red one, although I agree its a spurium. It sure is pretty. I have a spurium John Creech which starts off red, but turns quickly to green, so I doubt that's what you have.

Whoa! My S. aizoon does NOT have red stems that I can recall. . .and since it's late (and raining) I'm not taking a flashlight outside to check. . .but I'll get back to you on this one!

actually looks a lot like their S. ellacombianum. . .and some of the others might match up to your photos in Sedums/Part 2. . .

Carl, no problem with not going out in the rain :)...I'm sure my sedum isn't aizoon after seeing the pics on Wild Ginger, does yours stand up like that? That is a terrific site, great photos and I agree, mine does resemble S. ellacombianum. I'll have to see what it does when it gets into full bloom whether the blooms have red centers or not. Right now I think they will be pure yellow which pushes things to S. ellacombianum which is certainly the same family... syn. Sedum kamtschaticum ssp ellacombianum. What a mouthful, huh?

And I would say that a couple of the other sedums do resemble the green sedum in my other post, Sedum acre and Sedum lydium particularly although I have never seen red tips like S. lydium can have and I think mine is too petite to be S. acre.

Son of a gun. . .You have exposed a mislabeled plant in my garden! My
"alleged" Sedum 'Aizoon' does NOT have red stems, as we have both discovered in our research. . .but I HAVE the original labels (save them all!)
identifying it as such. . .and I even know the source, a lovely little Mom 'n Pop operation that has great plants, but which sometimes gets a little muddled on their botanic nomenclature. Heck, THEY were probably sold the original plugs identified as S. 'Aizoon' ! So, now I have to wait to see if someone identifies it for you. And, yes, my "mystery" sedum does stand up about 6"-8' initially, but eventually sprawls.

Well, perhaps it's Sedum half-acre. . . (Sorry - that one was a sitting duck!)

I am not trying to throw gas on the fire, but, many years ago as a horticulturist working at a nursery I was assigned the task of ID'ing the varieties of sedums that we were selling. I went through a very deep process to ID these plants almost 20 years ago. I studied all the references, ending up with Hortus III, prior to computer search and google. To me, the first picture, the "opening" or dropping sedum resembles the "normal" S. kamtschaticum. Yes, there is a secondary variety, S. kamtschaticum subspecies ellacombianum - I might add that I have that one in my yard and it does the same thing. It has leaves with less distinctly scalloped or "papilose" leaves, yet the same star-shaped flower as the species, with great fall color.
The S. floriferum 'Weinstephaner Gold' has often been misnomered as S. kamtschaticum 'Weinstephaner Gold' and as S. acre but truly it is the original species or subspecies of S. floriferum. Again, I have this one in my yard and have researched it because of its similarity to S. kamtschaticum.
That is my conclusion. Like I said, just trying to get the sedums straight for ya'll and the forum...I stand to be corrected! Sedum experts, lay it on me, Please! I love the sedums and am willing to learn!

I don't consider your comments gas on the fire, I am all about learning from other gardeners. And I do understand that sedums can be particularly difficult to ID. As Allan Armitage states in Herbaceous Perennial Plants "Finding the correct name for a stonecrop is an adventure in frustration, for even the great plant hunters came back from expeditions with bags of rare plants suitably given their botanical names and "some kind of stonecrop." lol

I will quote some more from Mr. Armitage as per your discussion of S. kamtschaticum vs S.kamtschaticum subspecies ellacombianum and S. floriferum 'Weinstephaner Gold'. Under S. kamtschaticum he states, "There is a good deal of variability in the species and plants which were originally given species or subspecies status (S. ellacombianum) are sufficiently similar to be lumped under S. Kamtschaticum. Related species: S. ellacombianum is sometimes classified as a subspecies of s. Kamtschaticum but the stems are not branched, the leaves opposite and have scalloped rather than toothed margins. It is shorter (4-6") and more compact. Beautiful star shaped flowers in lime green foliage can be seen in the spring and summer. However, after all is said and done, there is little difference from the garden point of view. S. floriferum is, as the name suggest, a floriferous species. It produces numerous flowering shoots along the whole length of the stem. Very similar to S. kamtschaticum, it is often listed as a variety (S. kamtschaticum var. floriferum). The flowers are smaller and paler yellow, but overall, plants put on a better show than the kamschatka form. Cultivars: ÂWeihenstephaner Gold is a terrible name for a wonderful plant. Dozens of golden flowers cover this ground hugging plant. Highly recommended. Plants are sometimes listed under S. floriferum"

So now that all this is as clear as mud...
