Help! Is she dead or can I save?

I was away in December and she survived my 21 days without water. I guess once I got home I overwatered, o maybe it is too cold, or maybe it is because she did not have water before... do not know, but I would love to save her... can I still re-pot? the stems look muchy and brown at the base, so not sure. Please let me know what to do! Thank you...

Cut off the remaining leaves with stems that are not brown yet. Do it TODAY. Cut them off high enough to remove the brown mushy stem ends. Stick the cuttings in water for a couple days to perk the leaves back up. You can then transplant the leaf cuttings into a light damp soil mix (African violet potting soil plus extra perlite , OR a ratio of 1:1:1 peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite) and put a clear plastic bag or container over them to keep them moist and humid until they root and grow new plants. Or you can just leave the cuttings in water until they root and grow baby plants.

Your plant has suffered death from too much water. The next time this happens, (and try not to have a next time), rejuvenate your violet with sips of water and misting with hot water until new growth begins. Make sure the water is hot as it will cool down considerably by the time the spray reaches the plant. Drying out desiccates the roots and dumping loads of water on a plant with a compromised root structure is an invitation for failure.
The next time you want to leave your plants for an extended period of time, water well, place in a darkened area and leave. People absolutely FREAK when I tell them this but it works quite well. I travel extensively and this is how I get my violets and orchids through.

Im a Phoenix gardener and can offer a few nuggets from my experience... did you use pre-packaged cactus soil? If so, I would suggest that this was not a good choice (sorry). I tried it once in a raised planter and would up digging everything out and removing the 'soil' and replacing it with something else. I found that it just could not hold water after it dried out and the plants were suffering. Since then, Ive mixed my own soil mixes and used my native soil as the base component. Ill mix in some 1/4" minus or pumice to get it draining better. I even have one raised planter that is pure 1/4" minus. After trying to grow and killing so many ice plants I cant even count, I gave up. They just burnt out in the summer no matter what I did. Not to say it can be done, I jut am not the one to do it. I think of them as annuals here. Ive killed some crassula too so Im not the best one to comment on those. Maybe looking into plants that have caustic sap or some other forms of natural protection from the bunnies would help (like euphorbia).

Did you check for any life anywhere in the bark up and down the tree? You can use your fingernail and check for any green, but actually with Japanese maple you can see if the tree is alive as it goes from green to brownish-red where it is dead. If it has any life, you might be able to save it but may need to cut it back quite a bit and protect from direct sun. We had two in a pot on the deck that burned and leafed out again when moved to our garage to recooperate. Good luck, let us know what you find out.

Hi! If she's in zone 8 I say plant them. No need to trim the roots , just sort of loosen them with your fingers . The plant puts a lot of energy into making roots so I don't think there's any reason to cut them back . Knock outs are very hardy and survive much colder than a 22 degree night . They will go kinda dormant for the winter so that may be why they look not so fresh green. As long as they have received water I'm sure they are fine :) she can scrape the branches with her fingernails and see it's probably bright green or greenish yellow and alive under there if that helps. I am in central Illinois and don't water too much, I had this for maybe two or three years and then it dried up one year. It was in a shadier spot too, might have gotten overrun by napeta or euphorbia. I had noticed that it was creeping into the lawn greedily, but it is gone now and the euphorbia is moving in to take its place! I would water yours well, keep it in a mostly sunny area (but not where it's going to get it the harshest sun) and watch for new growth. Or you could split it in a few pieces, spread out the roots when you plant it, and water it in. Keep an eye on it cuz it can help itself to it's neighbors' territory!

You still can restart it from a leaf. Make sure that you trim the stems quite short - so only the healthy green tissue is left.like older leaves at 7.30 and 12.30 on your pic - can be trimmed at the outside of the pot rim - and planted.
