It may be a change, I try not to buy the products with fertilizer mixed in but noticed at the grocery store yesterday they had only the Miracle Gro extended release fertilizer kind and Schultz w/fertilizer - I know the Schultz read '9' months feeding. I wonder how many climates have 9 months of active growth outdoors. Your seedlings don't need that fertilizer, but if that's what you have and don't want to exchange it, it will be up to you. You might want to buy something different for those things that are notorious for liking poorer soil like santolina, nasturtium, catmint, rock rose, others. Just keep in mind that pushing growth on plants of any age can encourage additional insect and disease issues, that's why many of us often suggest going light on or without the fertilizers. Please wear gloves when handling it!

That is a bummer. Heard it often here this year. I wish they would mark those bags better! It says on the garden soil bags that it isn't for use in containers but it is small print easily overlooked and many have fallen into the same trap you have - discovering its problems only AFTER they planted. I assume you know that there is much better (and cheaper) stuff than MG that's available for your WS containers? Dave

We have red clay in GA. I always amend the soil with composted manure and a good amount of soil conditioner before putting in any plants, and my plants have done fine. Because it is so hard to get very deep in this clay, I tend to put my plants in raised beds to help with the drainage, otherwise, the clay gets compacted and doesn't drain well, which then puts the tubers at risk for rotting. I've planted peonies in potting soil and kept them in pots to give them time to mature and they have also done fine. I've never had a tuber get moldy from the potting soil. I put the tubers individually in 2 gallon pots, and I amended the potting soil with composted manure, and I also add soil conditioner to the pots to help with drainage as well. I've left them in pots for as little as 6-8 months, to as long as 1 1/2 years outside, and this year, a Festiva Maxima that was grown from a very small tuber in a box has buds.

The problem is with the soil and not the plant. You need to pour water below the plant leaves and thoroughly drench the soil. Make sure the water is pH neutral or slightly acidic--absolutely no alkaline water (if not sure just use room temperature bottled water for now). Then go out to your nearest gardening store to buy a bag of african violet pottling soil and one bag of perlite (can also buy it online). Then mix 1/2 cup of soil with 1/2 cup of perlite and repot this plant. You'll need to completely soak the current soil, so you can pry it off gently and pot the plant in the new, better quality soil. A watering cord/wick can also help maintain perfect moisture for the plant. Good luck!
