Are these newly planted roses or have they been there a few years? Roses that are not well-established have trouble sustaining their flowers because their root system is not yet large enough.

How hot is it? Above a certain temperature, they are going to crisp no matter what.

Have you checked the soil underneath and around the plants. Are they getting sufficient water?

We had Mister Lincoln blooms fry in 96 degree weather.
We also are having trouble with insects eating our blooms, which makes them look like crap and a few do not want to open correctly.
Any insects/worms/etc. eating your blooms?
Are you having wet weather? Maybe blooms are balling?

The rose has been in the soil for about 2 years. Last year after winter, it bloomed beautifully with red lush petals. This year seems to be different.

The temperature has been around 75-85 F - not terribly hot. The soil is moist but not soaking wet or overly damp. The weather has not been really wet (by MI standards). Thus far, there has been an occasional passing rain every 2 days out of 7. No different from the previous year. But the morning sun is always quite strong: i.e. why I thought it's perhaps heat. Should I be watering more often?

There are no visible insects as far as I can see. I've inspected the flowers, canes, and leaves closely and there is no sign of any. I wonder if there is some sort of other infection or parasite because the plant overall doesn't look very healthy. There are yellow leaves without an abundant amount of green leaves to begin with.

I googled "balling blooms" and the rose buds look like the pictures which show up but they continue to bloom and produce dull poor quality flowers.

They look a lot like mine do, Michigan. We did have an unusual amount of rain in the spring and it's been cooler than normal as well. Now it's heating up and has been rather dry. I see all the same things in your pictures that I'm battling here, a little black spot, some powdery mildew, rose slugs, aphids, maybe thrips and botrytus too. This has not been a stellar year for growing roses in the Great Lakes!

I see some insect damage on your leaves and blooms in some of your pics. Looks like rose slugs, which would hang out on the underside of your rose leaves.

Seil, I recently moved to Michigan for California so I guess I shouldn't really speak to what "MI standards" are... :) I'm so glad someone answered my post who knows my local climate and has extensive experience with roses!

I've been looking all over my roses, even under the leaves and around the stems, but I just can't seem to find any insects.. especially none which are about an inch long. I'm going to scour the plant one more time for these rose slugs with a larger magnifying glass.

Anyhow considering this fairly extensive list (black spot, some powdery mildew, rose slugs, aphids, maybe thrips and botrytus).... what do you recommend I do? I'd also appreciate any fungicide/insecticide/bactericide product suggestions.

I don't see any urgent problems. We expect to have the occasional spoiled bloom or sick leaf.

I don't see any blackspot, but you can expect to have some in Michigan, starting on the lower leaves. Look up web images and notice the fibrous edges to the spots. If significant blackspot develops, the most effective fungicides are Bayer Disease Control (fungicide only, no combo products), Honor Guard, and Bonide Infuse. These also control mildew, which should be a lesser problem in your climate.

The cupped and wavy leaves could be from mildew, but it may not be active. Not a big deal unless much of the young foliage is furry and crumpled. Some of the white stuff looks like spray residue. The white sepals I think are natural with this variety. White stripes on the occasional petal are also natural.

The brown petals edges of bud #2 may have been caused by thrips feeding on the bud before the petals separated. Most of us ignore these and expect them to subside. There are also some petals that were pierced by some random bug.

With white-spotted leaves, check underneath and wipe off any tiny green rose slugs.

Most of us rarely or never use insecticides. Do not apply insecticide routinely.
