Hard as a rock!!

I went out last night to do a little trench composting. Honestly, we had rain all day before yesterday, but my clay garden was like a rock and I couldn't even get the shovel in more than four to five inches. I am trying to clean out my freezer to make room. (I was dumb enough to buy my second freezer without an automatic defrost). Each night I am trying to clean out a little and bury it so that all the racoons, squirrels, etc don't dig it up. I recall some years ago, we had a truckload of sand hauled in and we have tried to put horse manure on some parts of it, but is there anything else that I could add to break up this packed soil? I don't know how my corn can do any good in this. Fortunately most of my vegetables are in the raised beds. Hints? I go for months and don't post but it seems I have done a lot of it lately. Makes me realize how little I know. - Barb
