Forget me nots,... can I cut back to get more blooms?
Comments (2)I found the seed pack and the name is 'firmament' heirloom variety. Sorry I don't know the other names. I did get them in the ground a little late this year. On the pack it says to pick the old blooms to encourage side branching but doesn't say if they'll bloom. Are the sprouts you're getting the result of dropping to the ground? thank you... Comments (3)I'm growing the variety called Schwellenberg that Blue Stone perennials offered in their catalog. It's really a nice plant and doesn't lean or spread. It's color is a buttery yellow, about 24 inches high counting the flowers and with gray-green foliage. I cut all the brown flowers back, taking off about 8 inches. All the bottom foliage is left, but looking a little yellow and bedraggled with all the high temps and drought conditions we've had. I just thought cutting it down further would fresh up the plants a little, but that may not be the case. My salvia responded to cutting back after flowering so well that I thought yarrow might do the same. I just noticed there are some newer stems sprouting from the old stems....See Morecut back Goldenrod or Yarrow???
Comments (11)I routinely pinch or cut back the really tall species of Goldenrod (Solidago), perennial Helianthus, and Asters. They end up being a bit shorter and blooming a bit later. This seems to help prevent them from flopping as much. I usually do this in June, but early July is probably not too late, especially if you have a longer growing season. In the wild part of the yard, I've observed that these species are grazed on by deer, so they are probably well-adapted to this type of pruning. Unfortunately this Spring, I've had tendonitis in wrists and elbows, so I haven't cut back much. Only did a little pinching. The Helianthus maximiliani will probably end up being 10 feet fall and flop all over everything. 8-O...See Morecutting back for second bloom..help
Comments (1)Hi Daniella, Some varieties send up 2 or 3 bloom stalks from one main stem. You can try cutting off the dead flower stalk, just below where the 1st bloom opened. Once that stalk is finished with the flowers/buds, it's done and you should cut that stalk down to the ground. New stalks should be coming up from the ground. These will give you new flowers.
