Seeds from Hazzards? - Quality?

A WS friend sent me a link to Hazzards Wholesale Seed Store. Hazzards is a huge site that sells wholesale seeds, commercial greenhouse supplies, and wholesale plants (link below). The wholesale seed site is huge - thousands of varieties - and you can search for perennials by zone.

Has anyone ordered seed from Hazzards? Was the quality good? Were you satisfied with the company and service?

I've been looking for blue larkspur. At Hazzards, I found so many blue varieties, I was astounded, and wondered this was too good to be true.

I placed an order with Hazzard's 12/31 of 2009 so I can't vouch for the quality of their seeds. I ordered peony poppy, turtlehead & ladybells seeds. I also ordered ornamental grass seeds for a friend. Quite by accident I found out the ornamental grass isn't hardy in her zone. I emailed Hazzard's on Saturday, January 2 with a request to cancel the ornamental grass seeds part of my order. I got a confirmation email from Joyce Hazzard less than 10 minutes later indicating she would take care of it and make sure I was issued a refund. I'd call that excellent customer service. I'm going to WS the seeds and if you want to email me, I'll happily let you know how they do.

I also just recently (12/31) placed my first order from Hazzards, but only after checking the "other" site. There were no negative reviews for the company and some comments suggested their germination rates were very good on their seeds.

I decided to order some items from them that I REALLY wanted but did not find elsewhere like Kirengeshoma palmata and Rodgersia sambucifolia, so I am hoping this company is as good as their reviews.

I have had good luck germinating cleome seeds this way: Sow them into four inch pots with a light dusting of soil over the seeds. Water gently but thoroughly and let drain in the sink for an hour or so, until all draining has stopped. Then put the pots into ziploc bags and put them in the refrigerator for two weeks. (Mark your calendar for when it's time to remove them. You won't remember.) Then bring them out into temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees and expose them to bright light. They should germinate within two weeks. In the interest of saving space in the fridge, I usually put alot of seeds in the pots and then prick them out into individual pots after they get their first true leaves. Be sure to handle them by the leaves instead of the stem. Because it can take up to a month to get them germinated, cleome is one plant that should be started 10 to 12 weeks before planting out time. They are rampant self seeders here. I mulch heavily so that I will get just "enough" plants instead of a jungle. I am another big fan of Hazzard's Seeds. Their quality is top notch and their prices unbeatable if you use seeds in large quantity, which I do. I love the Bible verses they put on their stuff. The thoughts never fail to give me a lift during the day. Who doesn't need that?

I've often wondered about this .... my grandma had a magnifying glass, and would not let me out of her sight if we were outside with it. I remember seeing boys starting fires with a small pile of leaves and a magnifying glass just to amuse themselves. Of course, we're not using magnifying glass in our garden projects, but surely some glass, and the way it's cut, thickness, etc, could possibly magnify the sun's rays. Better safe than sorry, maybe we should make sure it only gets partial sun or less for safety's sake. ~tenderlee

Hi, I always use Geoseed. Very best prices, best seed (my germination experience), most varieties , cheapest shiping. They seem to be more for commerical growers but they are very, very nice and let us buy from them. Problem is the catalog. To get it in a usable form you have to click "Online Catalog". When that darn thing loads you will see icons at the bottom of the front page. The third icon from the left will say "save pages" when you pass over it with your mouse. Click that icon and you will get to download a PDF version which is easy to use. I also was lucky enough to get a hard copy which I constantly look at. Don't expect growing instructions or pictures for their 8,000 varieties, the professional growers have all that (but you can look that up easy enough. Look up an image on any search engine.) Always count/estimate the seeds you receive. Incidentally if you want to not end up "testing" a bunch of seeds and wasting money, first search (on Yahoo or google) for the plant variety you want, plus add the word "Trial" or "trials". There are several trial sites who have tested hundreds of plants. A variety might be well known but only 1 or 2 colors really do well. I like the U of Tennesse, Denver, Cornell, Dallas, NCSU, Auburn and the old U of Florida trials. All have excellent info. Bob Here is a link that might be useful: Geoseed link

Edna, if you aren't able to tolerate the first type of antibiotic the doctor prescribed, he can change the drug for you. Since you know it was a deer tick, it would be best to take two rounds of antibiotics. Lymes is a very debilitating disease, a terrible form of crippling arthritis. Carrie, did you wash with white vinegar to cut through any plant oils which got on you? Clothing can also be washed with vinegar and shoes/boots wiped down. I pruned roses yesterday. I used my pruner to pick up the lopped off branches, then dropped the trimmings into my tip bag. I wondered if everybody knows the trick of using the pruner to gingerly pick up thorny branches. I learned it from an older friend many years ago. One has to use a light touch to keep ahold of the trimmed branch without cutting through. My friend was suffering from cancer. She was too weak to prune her roses. I volunteered to prune them for her. She demurred, saying she was very particular about how pruning should be done. I told her she could bring a chair outdoors and supervise. She ended up following me around and directing each cut I made. She was very worried that I would be cut by thorns. She explained to me how to cut through the larger trimmed branches, to make smaller pieces, which could be picked up from the ground with the pruners, and deposited in a leaf bag. I'll jump in as a person who has ordered and sown Hazzards seeds and was very pleased with the results! It was a couple of years ago and everything germinated just fine and grew well. I still get regular emials from them with sales and things, but I don't really buy many seeds now that I do so much seed saving and swapping! The few things I need to purchase, I usually get at a store.

Anyway, I think your in good hands with HAzzards.

I've ordered multiple times and I've always had good germination rates and Joyce has been very helpful. In fact, I ordered right at Christmas time and got my order very quickly. I would recommend them.

I placed a small order New Year's Eve and figured with the holiday I wouldn't see my order until the second week of January. Now I'm thinking it might be here tomorrow! Ordered white double peony poppies, adenophera and white turtlehead. I'll keep you posted. They have pages upon pages of impatiens/busy lizzie seeds.

Just wanted to post an update--received my seed order from Hazzard's today. The peony poppy and turtlehead envelopes appear to have the full quantity of seeds in them, however the adenophera/ladybells seed pack appears to have far fewer than the 250 quantity marked on the package. If I were to guess, I'd estimate there might be 50 or 100 seeds. I'm sharing them with another WSer. Fingers crossed they all sprout.
