425 John Deere - power issue

I have a 2000 John Deere 425 AWS. A problem just arose when I place a load on the engine with my tiller or I accelerate. The engine seems to loose power and wants to die unless I remove the load. I checked the fuel filter and all seems fine. I think its the govenor, but am afraid to monkey around with this. Any help with this problem would be welcomed.....

Check your plugs for fouling. I had this problem with my 445 on occasion and noticed my left side plug was fouled and not firing. The NGK plugs in these have points which thread on and can vibrate loose if not tightened correctly. If the plugs are ok, check the rest of the ignition system before starting to dig more deeply.

How long have you had this tractor? The reason I ask, is these are EXTREMELY sensitive to cooling issues. The simplest cause is debris covering the radiator pre-filter and the radiator fins. Let us know you have thoroughly checked this first.

I have different model of mower than you but it sounds like you have a belt driven mower with two or three blades. Mine has three blades. My mower did what yours is doing. It was the gear box. It had lost it's oil during the last two to three mowings and finally seized up. I realized the mower was getting really loud but it didn't register with me that something was going wrong. The bottom oil seal went out and the bearing ran dry and seized up. Other things to narrow down where your problem might be. Remove the belt and spin the spindles. See if any one of them is tight. Maybe a bad bearing there. Check for something like a piece of wood is caught between the mower and a blade. DAMHIKT. That will stop a blade fast. Good luck.

I can only speak for the first. There are two reasons for oil loss--1 is faulty seals and or piston rings. This will lead to the oil making its way down to the combustion chamber and getting burned along with the fuel. --2 is loss from gaskets like the valve cover, oil pan,. etc.. If you see oil dripping down the side of the engine, its the latter, If you find oil drops under the tractor after sitting some time, its the latter. If you lose oil and you don't see signs of oil out side of your engine, its the former. If you have 2000+ hours on the motor and you are unsure of how it was maintained through the years, you are probably looking at an engine rebuild in the future. with regard to engine stalls, it can either be the engine needing tune up or your spindles are worn and cause excessive friction. The more you tell us, the more we can tell you. Did the problem with the engine stalling happen when you started using gator blades? Or have you been using them for years and it just started? Also, oil loss is gradual. I cannot imagine you just started losing oil after the last use of your tractor. Has it been happening for some time now? Has it been getting worse and worse? Do you see blue smoke when you run the tractor? The problems you are having are easy to determine (may not be easy to fix!).

That orange wire is the trigger wire from the ignition to the solenoid on the starter. You'll find a blade type terminal where this attaches.

actually i have idea what a camshaft or a camgear is. i thought they were just the same thing. now you can see i will never be the mechanic to maintein the JD properly. I followed everyone's advice here and accepted the 1999 JD 425 offer. It does NOT come with any attachment. It is used by a homeowner (sole owner) strictly for cutting grass in the past 10 years. i guess that explained the low hour of usage on the engine. i will arrange a pickup as soon as possible with the seller and will report back after that. hopefully it will go through smoothly this time. njrookie

Didn't I see some where that JD started putting a hotter thermostat in the later 425-445, something about emmissions? If the Kaw eng is that sensitive to heat, maybe a cooler thermostat would help. Something I plan to check out on the 445JD I bought once I get it home.

Exactly, but I didn't want to get into the thermostat and other things until the op confirms it isn't the simple ones.

No need to change thermostats. In fact, keep the hotter one in there. It's only a 180, so it's not "that hot". Suspect you've fouled one spark plug and you are only running on one cylinder. Heat has zero to do with it, and you have a temperature gauge to monitor that.

Though your posts are surely insider Deere, and I have enjoyed many, you are very wrong about these tractors and the changes due to the increased thermostat temperatures. To not make you feel slighted, I was the first case with my dealer to experience the thermostat, and then related carb. issues. It is the reason I have gone back to a CUT tractor.

Heat has everything to do with these series of tractors. They do not like it, and they do not run well under it. Those few degrees of difference are the difference between a sweet-running, cool-operating tractor, and one you can't wait to get rid of.

i have a 425 jd . carb. 20hp. ohv. k series 583 hours. last year the motor started missing and then it cutoff .the jd dealer installed a time delay module. on it.
it ran good for nov 2 2006 to nov 29/2007 now it has been in the shop 2 more times for this problem. dealer told me they do not know what is wrong.
things i have done to it myself the past week .
1.new air filters both of them
2.new fuel filter
3. checked and gaped plugs
4.cleaned raditor fins and screen
this mower has been very well taken care of. if anyone has had this problem please e/mail me . also just got my tractor back on sat.26/2008 dealer said they replaced time delay module again . if they did it still will not run
