what happened to Frozen In Time

Most of you saw the picture of this AV that I posted some time ago. I gave that plant away, not before starting two more of this plant. The new plants now have purple blooms instead of the green and white. BOOOOOOOO. How do I get them to go back to the green and white. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance. Pembroke

Thats the nature of this plant. You now have Frosty Frolic when it blooms with purple.Frosty Frolic is a sport of Frozen in Time.

They are both reg with AVSA.

So, can I take a leaf of Frosty Frolic and get a Frozen In Time back?? OR do I have to buy another Frozen In Time? What causes Frozen In Time to revert to Frosty Frolic? Is there a way to stop this? Pembroke

I, too, want that first tomato as early as possible. Before I learned about WS I started toms inside then transplanted into walls of water. I was quite satisfied with healthy, early, tasty fruit. Except now I see what a pain it is to start the seeds inside. This year my hope is to experiment by sowing the seeds in milk jugs, then putting the jugs in the walls of water. I don't expect toms as early as I would get them with the old way, but I'm hopeful it will make them early enough to make the trade off worthwhile. I really like getting my first vine ripened fruit by May 1. Maybe you could adapt from here, perhaps setting WOWs on your permanent containers?

The purple is actually completely normal for Frozen in Time. Here's the official description that the hybridizer submitted to the African Violet Society of America: Frozen in Time (9167) 02/03/2003 (Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses/Sorano) Single-semidouble white star/variable lavender tinge; green edge. Variegated light green and ivory, quilted. Standard. No need to worry about pH or any disease here. Looks like a happy, healthy plant. Mark

Seedlings frozen in time?

You won't believe this. They were seriously frozen in time. Then maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago my dogs knocked over a container. "Which container?" I hear you ask in a concerned voice. THE container. Of all my Takions she knocked over the only one with 3 seedlings. The other 3 jugs only have 1, and I WS 20 blues and 40 whites!! That's 6 seedlings out of 60 seeds. I couldn't believe it. But, I found the disaster soon and gingerly potted them again. You wouldn't believe the long long long long (but very thin) root on these babies. They were tiny 2-leafed seedlings and the roots were probably 3 inches long. THAT'S what they've been doing the whole time! I don't like the soil I sowed them in as I think it is compacting too much, and once I freed them from that soil the root leaves began to grow a bit, and now all three have one true leaf coming in. Amazing! The other seedlings still look the same. Maybe this weekend I'll knock them over, too. I do have one brand new seedling in a jug. woo hoo. That's 7 out of 60. Officially better than 10% now. I'm glad yours are growing. Brings tears to my eyes and gives me hope. I don't know if I'll ever WS another Campanula persicifolia again. I check the jugs EVERY DAY. I've lost a bit of my mind. most people with bamboo in planters or contained areas will divide or root prune every few years to keep the plant from choking itself out. in addition it is nice to replace the dirt from the rootballs you removed with your own topsoil mix. without maintenance it will become just like the 1 gallon plant you've seen sitting at the nursery for the last 5 years, rootbound. if the planter is too small for the boo to become mature, then you'll have a dwarfed plant. find some friends to give a bamboo start or specimen to. if you'd rather not do the work you can put an ad online and someone will usually be glad to remove some for you in exchange for the removed bamboo itself.

if it sports it sports. You need to get another one.
I had Frozen in Time some time ago - and it has a slight lavender tint to it - depending on the weather. Do not buy a plant - get a leaf - and spread the babies all over your friends. Then you always have a replacement coming in case yours sports again.

I have the same issue with Irish Flirt - it sports to pinkish Sassy Sister in my conditions. And I like Irish Flirt much better.

I've got one for you. I gave my mother a Frozen In Time and saw it the other day and half of the plant is purple and white and the other half is green and white. One plant. I looked to be sure that it hadn't started another. This plant is so crazy. Pembroke

What causes Frozen In Time to revert to Frosty Frolic? Is there a way to stop this? Pembroke

What causes sporting? Genetics, intense hybridization and growing conditions to name the most likely suspects. A violet that has been highly manipulated through hybridization carries genetics that are more complicated and thus more unstable than the original species or one that has not been as extensively bred. As a rule of thumb-the 'fancier' a violet is-chimera, fantasy, etc., the more likely it is to sport. Genes that are hidden can begin to express themselves. Often all it takes is a small bump-like our cold winter-to nudge these genes out of hiding.

Is there a way to stop this? Not really. Plants will grow as they will. The easiest way to handle this is to enjoy their spontaneity and unpredictability. Irina recommends taking a leaf from any new plant so you always have a back-up. This may help keep a FIT for you. Or the leaf could sport. Who knows?

Personally, I think your mother's plant sounds awesome. How about a picture?

What I believe is the "official" description of Frozen in Time says "variable lavender tinge" so even it doesn't promise that it will be just green and white.

This is the thread where I learned that FF and FIT were pretty much the same plant.

This is such an interesting thread! I have so many leaves down, half of them aren't labeled. Anything with a name is labeled. Now I'm wondering how many will be something totally new! There's always something new with these plants, I'm finding. :)

In my years of growing, leaves do not usually sport. The leaf will be true to the variety from whence it came. It is the plant that sports. Again, this is my experience, (forty years worth!) and you can never predict what plants will do!
