I'm knocking on major wood, but, I've never seen Japanese beetles around here for many years.

They are my #1 rose pest. I find that drowning them in soapy water is the only effective control. I think that they are probably coming from my neighbors yards, so unless I want to spray the entire neighborhood.....

No, I'm not going to spray! I read that even birds die if happen to eat them! They produce some kind of poison. The issue is that I had never seen them before in my area.At least not in tens of hundreds. Co-worker from New Jersy mentioned though that she has tons of beetles in her yard. That was like two weeks ago. She said she did not care if they are JBs or not, just had a lot of them munching on her flowers.But she has sandy soil...

I am surrounded by hundreds of acres of pasture and hay field and I have rose chafers every year. They can fly in from a mile away or more so how are you going to stop them? It would be great if I could get the township to spread Milky Spore by plane, LOL. OK, not likely. There's no beating them and I've given up fighting. The only saving grace is that their population has ups and downs from one year to another, according to some variable that I've never been quite able to put my finger on (weather is not it.) Anyway, in years that see low numbers of rose chafers I can do the soapy water routine and come away with a pretty good crop of blooms on my OGR's. In heavy population years, I tend to stay indoors and look through the windows at the little color remaining - tattered petals look better from afar, you see. (In bad years when they literally rain from the sky, there is nothing as creepy as having them drop down your collar of your shirt or get tangled up in your hair, IMO. Ugh!) At least their season is relatively short, 3 to 4 weeks with typically one to two weeks the heaviest.
Now, I don't have JB's in my area YET, but they're moving ever closer and that could spell the end of my rose growing days, when I'd have beetles the whole rose season through - not worth the effort, I would think. I'd have to yank the roses or move!
That all said, the rose chafers are just beginning to show up here so it's too early to tell just what kind of a year it will be for them. I'm betting it's going to be bad, just based on how prolific every other bug seems to have been this spring from tent worms to aphids.

This year I had my first invasion of rose chafers. Never before have I had "heebie jeebies" or tears over loss of blooms by a garden pest. This year was different.

The first blooms to be affected were the bearded iris (light purple) - we had enjoyed the iris for 2 weeks, then the third week (late May/early June) the chafers appeared. I could not stand them flying around me, and since I had enjoyed the iris so far, I cut down the stalks and put them in municipal yard waste covered bins (heat in bins killed the beetles, but there were zillions more in yards around mine). The peonies (white and pink) were the next feast - I tried to cut these blooms to bring in the house right away before the chafers could skeletonize their blooms. This was helpful and we could enjoy the flowers at least (normally I leave most blooms in garden and enjoy them outside). Now the beetles have enjoyed a week of eating the leaves of our white birch tree.

Really, I have ever seen anything like these beetles before. The first week when I freaked out, I brought one to the local extension and it was identified right away as a rose chafer. They suggested row covers - well, that was not something useful to me or my thirty foot birch. But I appreciated their advice. I knew I would just have to live with it. I wonder if we will see fluctuations from year to year. Killing grubs chemically in the pre-winter stage when eggs are laid in July is not something I want to do, and would be pointless as the beetles are in all the yards. So, I will try to keep a healthy soil, hope to enjoy some blooms next spring before they come again (hopefully in much fewer numbers), and see what mother nature has in store for these buggers.

Thank you, Rachel! Like you I was mostly mad because of my white japanise iris . That one unfortunately blooms only once a year, and I consider it to be one of the most beautiful perennials in my garden. You are almost three zones colder than I'm so my bearded irisis bloomed before chafers came. Actually I see less of them this week, just keep picking them up.Also alerted my DH and he does the same . My white clematis has brand new flowers again.
Thank you Henry too. Most interesting think is that your article talks mostly about grapes, and chafers did not even pay attention at my grapes. So far...
Yes, Jim, and I also have midge. And still attempt to maintain 86 roses, and full time job!:).God bless those who lives in mid -Atlantic.
