Training Mini Climber up 60' rose tree?

I happened upon a clearance of 60" rose trees. They were $23! (they were sick of housing them)So.........I bought four!

2x Route 66

1x Pillow Fight

1x Ranae

So, I was thinking how pretty it would be to grow one of my mini climbers up Pillow Fights' stake. Right now the stake is butted up against the cane (shank, trunk?). I could move it out a bit? The mini would also shield cane from sun burn.

Am I on the right track?

I think that is a great idea - just make sure how big the "mini climber" gets in your climate! I have a climbing Rainbow's End which is over 7 feet tall and would go higher if I let it. Not sure if you want the mini climber to climb all over the blooming part of your rose tree....

I have a question about Gertrude Jekyll. I pruned mine after its last flush to about 2-2.5ft and it looked pretty tidy for about two weeks It's since put out a couple of basals and new growth that has to be 5ft at least at this point. Gertrude Jekyll on 8/2/16 Gertrude Jekyll 8 days later As you can see, my GT is looking kind of gangly - Clearly I didn't prune it hard enough! My question is is it necessary to wait until after the cane blooms to cut it down? This is sitting out in front of a window at my apartment, and is kind of an eye sore to look at, plus, I don't want to draw unwanted attention. If it helps to know, I'm in NC zone 7b. AKA humid and hot!

Thanks for the suggestions everybody! Keep in mind that blackspot resistance is a big, big factor here. mad_gallica, They aren't white pines, we're way too far south for those. I've had a landscape architect tell me they were loblollies--although we're at the very northern range for them so maybe that's why that don't seem so aggressive--I've been here 5 years and they've grown but not so excessively. I do have to clean out multiflora grown from seeds the birds bring in under them every few years. Because they finish shedding their needles right before this photo there is actually grass under them that you can't see--at least in the gaps there is. But it does sound like I need to focus on very vigorous roses. Jackie, the Lady Banks I want to move is currently thriving in a sport a lot less protected than this! It was a gift that I would have never bought myself so if it doesn't work no big loss there! The gaps in the trees make for a SSW exposure. I've already dug and amended (big) holes with a copious amount of horse manure compost with the plan to let it sit over winter for spring planting. I was actually surprised with how little root resistance we had while digging. Of course now that it is amended it might be a different story in a year!

What a great thread. So much to learn. Altorama, your Veilchenblau is spectacular. I ordered mine last year after seeing your photos. I am in awe how Marlorena trains no less than 3 roses on a single obelisk. I'm still afraid to try just one, fearing I'll snap the cane, as it often happens. Monarda, that's how they train Ispahan at Sissinghurst. I saw the photos from there long ago and can't find the site where it's explained how it's been done there. Can Sweet Drift be trained as a climber?

Kelly, I don't think that beautiful rose is Sweet Drift. The bud count per cluster of yours (formerly), is higher than my Sweet Drift. Also, my Sweet Drift's blooms rarely show their beautiful yellow boss (stamens), as your rose shows. SD's centers are tightly petal packed. The individual petals of my Sweet Drift are broader, and the outer most petal tips on each bloom quill a little. I don't see any quilling on the blooms in your close-up photo. The clincher is that no very long basal canes ever emerge from my Sweet Drift's crown, as any climber, even a mini climber will grow. I think I see long basal canes in your photo. However, if you only require a climber that grows 5' long (up, or out), I bet Sweet Drift will cover that length in short time if purposely trained that way. Its length will be achieved by laterals, growing from laterals, growing from laterals, on and on....not by very long basal growths achieving the length you need. If any of the Drift series roses can be made to 'climb,' Sweet Drift is the one use because It likes to creep more than any other Drift. It surely likes to creep outward, like a cascader. I can't see why it's creeping tendency can not be trained upward. If you are prepared to do some training, I think your efforts will be well rewarded. Moses

I have Climbing Rainbows End and Jeanne LaJoie and Pennies From Heaven. I am thinking Pennies from Heaven as it is supposedly the shortest and the contrast would be cool. I don't think I want it mingling with Pillow Fight...

My climate supposedly grows monsters out of everything. San Diego not inland not coastal, 'tween. BUT we haven't had much sun or heat this season so I won't know for awhile. One good thing is the weather has allowed me to work everyday on the garden. Otherwise, being the sissy San Diegan I am, I would be taking cover under the big eucalyptus tree by day and working by flashlight at night! (not really, but kinda :-) )

HMF says that CL Pennies From Heaven grows up to 8' tall, and spreads out. Since you are in SD, it would probably get that big - not sure that it what you had in mind. Climbing miniatures are miniature in the flower, but not in size of the plant.

I thought you might want to consider using just a miniature, not a miniature climber. That way you could be fairly certain as it its height - Help Me Find is a great resource. OR, perhaps a polyantha with a small growth habit. Little White Pet is my favorite. I live in the SF Bay Area, and all roses grow to whatever their maximum size might be here. I have 3 Little White Pets, and even the 2 that are over 10 years old are only 2-3 feet tall. If you don't like white, I'm sure you could find a tall miniature or a short polyantha you would like - check HMF or the Vintage Garden website - they have a great way to search out color & habit.

Well 8' would probably be a bit much. I was going by the NorEast info. HMF is an awesome site. I have really only checked names, sizes and pics. I should familiarize myself better with the options. Thank you Jackie for helping me think this through! I am landscaping my whole backyard myself right now. About 1/4 acre. There are times when you get stuck on something....it's frustrating. I really want to make it a charming neato magical place :-) So thanks for the help!
