These flowers feel like Royal Empress Tree

I am not falling for them, but many are fascinated by the "blue" flowers.

I would describe this tree has the flowers of Royal Empress tree and the leaves of Mimosa tree, for the usual GW vigilantes clan...

If you take the time to prune a royal empress tree every year, water it, and fertilize it, and it is protected from high winds...it will end up looking like what you see in the pictures. Those are real trees! However, since most people do not have those resources....there are other good trees to get. You might want a catalpa, some type of redbud tree...but my personal favorite as a substitute is the Northern Magnolia. It has beautiful pink blooms that cover the branches before the leaves come out with a light fragrance, so it will not attract many bees. Plus, since it is magnolia, it will have leaves year round even though they look deciduous. I've told this story several times since the first time in 2012 or so. I had two ancient Paulownia tomentosas removed from the front yard of our new house in May of '07- before we even moved in. I felt terrible that our new neighbor's first impressions of us were as tree killers, but it simply had to be done! As much as I hate killing a tree, I am not a criminal. The criminal is the IDIOT THAT PLANTED the damned things. I had the roots ground out as deep as the largest grinder would go. The roots shoots that came up that year were horrendous- one every foot covering the entire yard. It was literally a daily chore to keep up with them- you'd cut them all then the next morning there would be another hundred of them 2 inches tall. They came up again equally as bad in '08, all spring and summer. In '09 they slowed down a bit on my property but began seeking new areas as I saw them in neighbor yards as well- not only on the adjoining properties but across the street. Spring and summer of '10- three full years since I had the trees taken out- and I still got shoots. THREE YEARS! They slowed down considerably but I still had to cut down one or two every couple of days. They are impossible to pull. They are one tenacious tree. AND... I cut more root shoots in the spring of '11!!! Four. Full. Years. After the trees were removed. This tree is the devil!!! This is the very first year I have not seen one- five full years of diligently patrolling the yard with scissors to cut root shoots. In a way you're gotta respect that degree of the will to live!

Funny to see you here Neil. Looks like we're on the same track. :-) I actually planted 2 royal empress trees back in May. One in front of my house and one in back, even after reading the negative feedback. Both are doing well! One of them actually has two main 'stems' coming from the base and the leaves are very large. They're approximately 12"-18" right now. I did read that you should cut them back to the ground in the fall the first year, which promotes a better root system and allows them to grow larger faster. Paulownia tomentosa, or empress tree, is a very week-wooded tree that is also an aggressive self-seeder in MA, CT, and RI. Depending on where you live in NH, volunteers may or may not be a problem. It may also be winter-killed and not grow into tree form - the specifics of your locale will make all the difference. It's the only blue-flowered tree I can think of - but there are rose of sharon and tree wisteria that would not get as big and might or might not work for you. You might also call around about the tree lilac, they're pretty common. There are search engines that will show all the nurseries in your area - try http://www.gardenguides.com/resources/nurseries/ and type in your zip code. 1. medium sized flowering tree.
2. excellent urban tolerance
3. very drought tolerant (best with a summer rainy season)

For semi-arid tropical and sub-tropical climates, there are not a lot of options for urban trees. Since Jacaranda often flowers before it leafs out, the wow factor also promotes its use.

Your opinion of it is trumped by its overall usefulness.

Yes, practically, it is a great choice. But I still prefer Magnolia Grandifora over this.

Not sure what the last 2 posts are supposed to mean...there are a lot of places where southern magnolias and jacarandas can grow together, even in the US. Like Southern California, Florida, etc.
This wasn't a very hard one: it's probably one of the most recognizable subtropical trees around the world.

Thank you very much for your insight. smivies is stretched to cover sub-tropical trees from Toronto. His answers are, however, quite accurate.

This is not a question for ID thread. I realize how my mindset has been influenced by popular views. Both Mimosa and Royal Empress tress are deeply resented by some in the US. Over a long time, I unwittingly adopted the bias and I could not appreciate Jacaranda trees any more. I will strive to appreciate it.
