Pruning a dying dogwood tree

I have a mature dogwood tree with a forked truck where one of the forks appears to be dying and where the other fork is not exactly thriving, but is at least looking healthier and more vibrant than the other. In an attempt to save what I can, is it worthwhile for me to cut down the fork that is struggling? If so, will that tend to redirect any energy over to the healthier side?
