Do you know what kind of tree this is??

Hello,

We moved into this home about 3 years ago and this lovely tree has done nothing but impress us!

We just don't know what it is. Can you help identify it?

It blooms late spring. Is very healthy. Could probably use a hair cut!

Thank you so much, everyone! The holes do go all the way around the base of the trunk. About 2-3 years ago there was a huge japansese long-horned beetle infestation in this area. Someone mentioned that the holes might be from the Department of Agriculture's testing for disease. Does this sound plausible? Here are some (I hope) better pictures of the buds/leaves. I know my photography skills leave a lot to be desired, but hopefully at least one of these will be sufficient! Also, I should mention that that corner of the yard is behind the rest of the yard as far as flowering/leafing. I don't know why, but can guess that it's at least in part due to the ridiculous vines that had taken over the entire area. We spent a full day ripping out the vines and trying to salvage what we could. It's amazing the damage they can do! We have a Scots pine that was almost swallowed whole by the vines. Hopefully we got it out in time for some of the trees to rebound. The rhodies in the rest of the yard are now blooming and beautiful, but the bushes in that corner have yet to flower. Again, thank you so much! I'm so overwhelmed (but also excited) with all I have to learn!

What else... Rainfall. How much over the whole of the year, and when in the year. How much mist? How high are you above sea level? Does your property face the sun (South, for you) or are you shaded by hills, buildings, whatever, and don't see the sun until later in the day? Does the frost take it's time about melting, even when it's sunny? When is your first/last frost of significance (the one that terminates the tomatoes or mushies the young bean plants)? Is your soil acid, or alkaline or neutral? 6,5,4 is tending acid. 8,9 is tending alkaline. 6.5-7.5 is around the neutral range. You can buy a home test kit from your garden centre or farmers' supply depot. With maples and cherries, I'd guess at moderately acid - especially if you have pines and native rhododendrons in your woods/bush. How deep is the topsoil, and does it dry out over the summer? Do you have boggy patches in the woods, or is it mostly well-drained after the heavy rains? How dense are the roots in the area where you might want to have planting pockets for treasures? And what sort of shade??? Do the trees cast shadows sprinkled with patches of light on a sunny day? (Dappled light.) Or does it look as gloomy as a winter day when you go in on a summer's day? (Dense shade) Dry shade is the sort of thing you get on the north side of the house under the eaves. Rarely gets natural moisture. A useful zone for drying out bulbs over summer, but can be a gardening challenge. Hope that's helped a bit.

I finally found a pillow I like -- at Costco! I don't recall the price, but think it was about $30 for two. (Since it was Costco I knew I could return it.) I'm a back/side sleeper. I've had it for three months. The package says "Charisma Luxury Down Alternative Pillow Two Pack" and "Jumbo 20in X 28in". I think the secret is that it has a gusset edge, so I can 'fluff' it up to give enough support. It's machine washable, although I haven't washed mine yet. The fiberfill is Comforel(TM) Silkysoft(TM). Hah! Now that I'm looking at the tag on the pillow I see it says it is 18" X 26" X 2" -- not exactly what the package advertised, eh? The covering is made in China, but the pillow is filled and finished in USA. Manufacturer is Hollander Home Fashions of Boca Raton, FL. Anyway...I really like it!

Definitely a doublefile viburnum, which is a shrub rather than a tree.

hmmm..

my thought was.. it has to go.. too big.. too close to the house .. lol .. regardless of what it is ...

and if you give it a 'haircut' .. i will track you down and shave your head ...

if you wish to maintain it through PROPER PRUNING ... then learn how to do it.. but do not shear it and give it a hair cut ... and how you would do that ... depends on a proper ID ...

After reading the link you included (thanks!) it was clear that that is my tree, or actually, now I realize, Shrub!

I don't have any close up pics, and it's not in bloom yet, so they probably wouldn't reveal much. After all the info though, I am almost positive it's what Flora mentioned.
Ken, you made me giggle. No, I wouldn't *really* give it a hair cut! I will prune it back. I haven't done a thing to it since we got here, so its probably time. And yes, it is much too close to the house! But I love it and there is no way I could part with it.

And now I'm off to learn how to properly prune a Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Mariesii'
