I don't like heuchera flowers, either. I cut them off as soon as I see them. As far as purple and silvery cultivars or whatever you want to lump them as, "Plum Pudding" is an outstanding performer for me, a strong grower that keeps rich coloration all season. "Silver Scrolls" has also done exceptionally well over the years. "Midnight Rose" are going into their third season with me. Still performing well - holding their own in a less than optimal spot. Truthfully, I don't love the coloration; it's okay, but nothing I want to jump up and down about - I jump up and down regarding the fact that a heuchera actually does well for me, though, so... I need a couple more fillers, so I'm watching this thread for ideas. :0)

You know, purple heucheras can look great with so many things. Not just their color, but their round(ish) leaves and the pattern the leaves set are distinctive. Mine are fronted by a tiny-leaved creeping pennyroyal with an August cloud of lavender flowers. They are backed by a variegated mariesii Hydrangea. Also snuggled up in front of the heucheras are some first year (meaning non-blooming) Rudbeckia with low growing, large, green leaves. I'll pull those Rudbeckia out by late spring next year, but for now it is an engaging combination.

Your purple heucheras are so pretty with the white tulips! I just bought Forever Purple from Terra Nova Nursery and it's truly purple. I don't know if it's a new one--Terra Nova is a few miles from me so it might not be widely available. The other purple I have is Dolce Licorice, which has big, beautiful rocket flowers. Here they are five years ago soon after I bought them, and they're still going strong, despite being moved. I have found that they bloom better in the sun and grow bigger in drier conditions. I've also had Obsidian but didn't like it nearly as much as Dolce Licorice. That one faded with each move and is gone now.

I used the Tomato Tone when I planted them out last month. I followed the directions on the bag--I forget how much. Since then, I've not used any. I did see a few marble-sized tomatoes. But the flowers just look bad. Not healthy. I get my compost from an organic gardener, who does organic landscaping. Basically, rich people pay him to set up their organic gardens. I've always used compost only, and add new compost each season. I also thought that if you used high-quality compost, you didn't need fertilizer--that the organic matter was enough. I guess I was wrong. Everything I'm growing this year, looks meh, and seems to b growing very, very growing slowly.
