does compost have to get hot?

I just started a compost pile this past spring. I have one of the commercially made ones that stack. When I started the pile I put in a bag of leaves and some grass clippings along with kitchen scraps (veggies and fruits). My brother, who has been composting for a while, was concerned because my pile was not heating up. He suggested that I add more grass clippings to really compact everything down and leave the top open. My question is--does the compost pile have to heat up? We usually mulch mow so I took someone else's grass clippings and put them in. It smelled terrible. Have I ruined my pile? Sorry for the long post :)
