You could recycle the bottoms of large plastic containers to place multiple cups in. For instance, a milk jug bottom ought to hold 4 cups. The bottom of a cat litter jug might hold 8. They can be cut "high", up to the rim of the cups, so that a plastic bag or cover could be easily secured in place, and they wouldn't tip over or blow away. No money involved - just recycling.

Another idea would be to brace them up using milk crates (if you can find milk crates)or better yet put them in the milk crates because it already has holes in it which will allow drainage.

Thanks! The milk jugs are so valuable to me for WSing perennials that I have to save all I can for that. Also, the milk crates are being used to hold all of my WS'd perennials in their containers.

I did come up with a great answer while looking around the storage areas here at the farm. We raised meat chickens for a year (ONLY one year because it was unbelievably disgusting and horrible) and we had lots of chicken transport cages. Each would hold 15 large chickens. When we got out of the business, we sold just about everything but kept 2 of the transport cages. One we were using as a little home for a litter of kittens and it was very easy to transport them to the vet for neutering and spaying.

We will always probably have a use for these, but for now, they are perfect for these clear beer cups!

May I ask you how you sow your daylilies? have you sow them before and had success with them? If you winter sow them when do you start?

carmen,do you cross your own daylilies.I wsd 25 containers last night and wsd about 12 containers last yr. in Feb.Mine ws beautifully.I have started a collection of daylilies and have bought a few plants.I have received all the seeds from trades and one very generous lady that raises daylilies but did not want the seeds.I have so much to learn about this lovely plant.I am glad you found a solution to your problem.I bet those chickens were a handful but just think of the benefit from the manure..lol.

A real simple, and free, idea I have used to keep light cups from blowing away. I get boxes from a store and cut off the top flaps. Set the cups inside and cover the top of the box with heavy plastic secured with lots of clip type clothespins (found bags of plastic ones at the dollar store). The box will get soft and ruined by the end of winter but will keep the cups upright and they won't blow over or tip if packed tightly in the box. Has worked for me. Good luck!

i've been putting my cups into them 2 liter crates. works good. but as for the top, not sure. i'm going to make a house thing out of 6ml clear plastic and put them under it.

Thanks all. I WSd 50 beer cups with 5 seeds each (50 crosses) and put little sandwich baggies over them with holes poked in. They all fit very snuggly in the chicken transport cage. I was going to do a second cage but I ran out of 'indoor' promix and the outdoors stuff is solid as a rock today.

So, I have to wait for warmer temps so I can get to the rest of my soil.

For the question above: For the last 10 years, I have put daylily seeds in a ziplock (one quart sized baggie for each cross --- even those with up to 100 seeds) with a handful of damp peat moss. I would do this about 3 weeks before the soil could be worked in the spring. By then most seeds would be germinated and I would plant them all in rows outdoors. This WS is a new thing for me and I am excited to see the outcome.
