Planting tree where another tree was

Just how difficult is this?

I have a no-name green Japanese maple that's about 15' tall (it's like a "Bloodgood" but it's green) that has suffered some damage over the years but has always seemed to hang on. However, this year two major branches have already died back, and there's not really much of the tree left - sadly, it has to go.

I'm assuming I'll have to have the stump ground in order to plant another tree here - is that correct? Or because it's a type of Japanese maple, would it be possible for DH and I to dig everything up ourselves w/o calling the tree service to grind it? (being that these are shallow rooted trees)

Am I safe planting a "Bloodgood" Japanese maple in this spot, or should I go with an entirely different type of tree. This spot begs for a tree about this size, the location draws the eye to the front door.
