I have not used milk jugs for 3 years now.

I save 2 liter bottles and 2 qt. juice boxes for potting up dahlia tubers.

I use garden hose with a nozzle set for misting to water my large containers.

Anything that provides room for 3" of potting mix and some head room for the seedlings.

Two liters. I tried several things last year, but the two liters seem to work the best for me. When you put them out, they stay upright because of the way I cut the tops and smush it back down into the base. I can see sprouts easily when they come, and watering is simple with the mist setting on my hose sprayer. I only had to water a couple times last year. Most perennials get planted out well before it warms up enough to dry them out.

My annuals are almost completely sown in small, 9ounce styrofoam cups. It makes planting easy, just dig a hole and plop the entire clump in that spot. Will be doing this for petunias and zinnias again for sure.

Token - I think you've posted pictures before of your annuals in cups, I think I'm going to take that tip from you and try it this year. I noticed last year I had a hard time getting them out of the lasagna flats! Maybe I should have tried a spatula. Lol*

Large plastic sweater containers, the kind you might slip under your bed,love these, i can sow several kinds of seeds in one flat,cuts my work down to a minimum,and easy to water.
Plastic shew boxes from the dollar store,last year i found some really neat containers at wal mart, that have the lid attached,loved these also, reusing all the above again this year.
I do have some 2 liter soda bottles,and a few milk jugs, milk jugs are my least favorite to use.
Oh, and some lasagna pans from the dollar tree, i found some that were 4 inch deep,with lids!
I will also use any thing that is at least 3-4 inches deep.

quilt_mommy, The cups are easy. Just sow a few seeds in each. Zinnias were a snap and no damage to the roots when you sink the whole plug into a hole. Just be careful cause they do tip over easy. I picked up some trays from the garden center this year to make it easier. Each tray holds 10 cups.

Gallon milk jugs is what I use for 99% of my winter sowing. The other 1% is made up of cups, butter tubs and such.

Milk jugs, and if out 2 litres. I have tried lasagna pans, deli and salad containers-but they get crushed by the snow. Same with containers and plastic wrap. Just too much weight. The jugs hold up the best for me.

Gallon jugs for me also - although gallon pots with plastic on top worked okay, and I'll probably use up my little "stash" of those when I run out of milk jugs.

Tom, do you reuse the styrofoam cup over or plant the zinnia with the cup? I've bought some beautiful annuals before and cut the bottom out of the container and planted the pot and all in my large container. Would styrofoam break down in the soil eventually? Or you take the zinnia along with potting mix and plant just that?

My current love is the extra large mesclun/spinach box from BJs. My family loves both so I have a steady supply.

This is my first year. I am LOVING the large yogurt containers. We don't really drink a lot of soda, or milk, but we consume a lot of yogurt, so this is what I have. Again, it's my first time so I don't know how well they're actually going to work...but as far as prep time, I think they've been the easiest. Tonight I put another spin on them and cut holes in the lids, leaving only the lip of the lid, and put that right on top of the plastic - no taping. I hope that will hold the plastic in place. If it does, that is definitely the ticket. Easy easy!

This is my 8th year WSing and I now use only 2-liter pop bottles and large Glad containers.

Here's a thought - wonder if you could line the styrofoam cups with newspaper, so when it comes time for planting you could just ease the plant out in the paper wrapping and plant - assuming you open the paper from the bottom for the roots. I have received plants this way in plant sales...I wonder how it would work for WS'ing?

Gallon milk jugs and 2 QT clear juice bottles (from cranberry juice etc).

Those Simply Lemonade, Simply Limeade, etc. bottles. I like the square shape b/c they are easy to form a "hinge" on. Also, the plastic is very sturdy.
