Comments (11)lawntrouble - picking up on tomplum's brake arm comment - there's only one "brake" on the machine called the park brake. It's located on the side of your auto transmission - consisting of a external disc and caliper with pucks. When you push your clutch/brake foot pedal fully down, first the ground drive belt is disengaged ad then the little disc brake is activated. Sometimes, that little disc brake can get corroded/trashed up to where the disc brake will not release by itself...and prevents the transmission from operating smoothly. Find the brake and then make sure it is not sticking. ENGINE OFF AND BE CAREFUL UP UNDER THERE. You may have to take off the mower deck and have an assistant operate the clutch/brake pedal while you are observing the little disc brake mechanism itself for correct movement. If dirty/corroded, apply brake cleaner that comes in the aerosol spray can to get it clean and working. If the brake linkage needs adjusting, refer to the procedure for such in your manual. (BTW, that manual that mownie chased down for you is indeed bilingual - BUT contains a complete english version. Get a copy if you do not have one now.) There can be several root causes to the type of prob you have (and possibly some others caused by those "repairmen" from sears)... some simple things to check: 1) make sure that the tranny freewheel control rod is fully pushed in (not hung partially out). It's located on the back frame lower left. 2) If either/both of the rear wheels have been taken off recently, make sure that both axle hub keys are correctly assembled. Hope all this might help. Comments (18)I know this post is old, but Google felt it was relative to my question. I'm having a problem with the transaxle designed pictured in the drawing and photo shown above. The symptom was the Mower stopped forward motion, and belt was smoking. I replaced the symptom first (a new drive belt) and continued with my unsuccessful diagnosis. I removed the transaxle and watched a half dozen videos of what's going on inside these little buggers. What I found was the reverse gear was wobbleing excessively on the shaft and hitting the bolt and nut that goes through the differential or spider gear carrier and jamming up, stopping the Mower dead in its tracks. I scored a deal on both gears, the shaft and shifter finger on EBay. It arrived but was a right hand shift model. I own a left hand shift. So I could not use the new shaft for the forward and reverse gears, I had to clean up the old shaft best as possible,, it appears ok, but I understand it runs constantly at twice the speed. It maybe on borrowed time. (Trade a right for a left shift axle anyone?) With the transaxle still open and split in half, I drove myself nuts trying to figure out what kept the reverse gear all the way over to one side, as even the new reverse gear ran into the diff bolt. Your above drawing and hand written explication cleared this up for me, THANK YOU! the pinion gear lines all that up and keeps the reverse gear from traveling too far and running into the diff carrier bolt. I discovered all this sitting in the comfort of my Lazyboy while searching on my tablet. As of this moment it's all theory, the transaxle sits open on my workbench out in my cold garage tonight. I will tackle this problem tomorrow, and if it doesn't go well, I will check back here and I'll include pictures, they seem to be the key to some excellent responses. If you guys have picked up on something in my post that is a red flag in my repair that I've gotten wrong or I don't see, please I'm all ears gentleman. Comments (51)My experience with this MTD variable speed drive is that the drives don't slip until the belts are real bad or you have a loose mount. It is best to replace both belts at once, but as the rear belt wears much more quickly, you typically can just change that belt. If the front belt is noticeably worn or is chunking, then it gets replaced obviously. If the front belt gets replaced, for sure do the rear or you may have a low speed issue. You absolutely have to use the OEM belts. The linkage was set up properly when it was new and should not typically need adjustment unless it has been fiddled with or damage occurred. The adjustment is an adjustable end like a tie rod where you pull the pin, unlock the jam nut to make the adjustment. Look for binding linkages and that the transaxle mounts front and rear are secure. The VS pulley should both turn freely and the center sheave should move up and down freely as well....See Morewes2
