New Craftsman - Possible Problems Already

I just took possession of a slightly used Craftsman YS4500. The tractor has a 24 hp B&S with a Hydro Trans. With 25 hours, it is basically new. I took her out for a spin in the yard today and noticed a possible problem. When I engage the blade, the tractor stalls when I go in reverse. Otherwise, the mower does go forward either way and reverse works fine when the blade is disengaged. Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this? Any ideas on how to fix?

I expect this mower is made so the blade stops when you back up - safety feature. There should be switch or a key postion you use to mow in reverse.

u might feel stupid if this is what the problem is but if uve nevr owned a modern tractor dont be. inorder to go in reverse on the tractor with the deck turned on u have to turn the ignition key to a special position which should be obvious once u look.

The sunlight shouldn't affect it. I can't think of any way that it would. "I have solid green and orange LEDs, " But that doesn't mean that they are aligned correctly and the slightest vibration could throw them off. They can be close enough to make the LEDS light up while the door isn't moving. Watch the LEDS while it is closing and see if they blink. Use a string or straight edge if you have one that is long enough, or you can also use a laser level. Using a string is easiest to describe, so I will use that example. I hope you can figure out my instructions! It's easier with two people but if you are doing it alone. Tie the string below one sensor and pull it over the top of it, then over the top of the other sensor. The string should lay flat across both. Adjust if needed. Then tie off to the side of one and pull across the other and adjust that axis also. Repeat step one in case the adjustment moved the other axis. I hope this helps.

Everything points to multiple problems. The problem with the sensors and the LEDs going out sounds like a short in the wiring. The problem with the door not closing and the code you are getting point to the RPM board (shutter). I would tackle the sensors first because you can substitute in some wire to eliminate the possibility of a short. You must follow the color coding on the wire. The RPM board can't be too expensive.

I don't think your keypad will work with the new opener but I don't understand why your remotes do. Anyway try programming the thing this way. Press and immediately release the smart/learn button on the opener and then walk over and key in your 4 digit code and press enter. The "press and immediately release" is important and if it is going to work with the new opener it should now.

Do you *honestly* believe he's not even flirting online anymore? And are you completely comfortable that he'll be faithful to you while he's deployed and his buddies all go off tail-hunting? Because if you don't seriously believe that, and if you don't trust him 100% to be faithful, then what you have isn't really a good marriage. You can admit it now, get a quickie divorce, and try again in a little while as a woman who's older and wiser. Or you can string this thing out until you catch him again and he admits it but promises never to do it again, or 'sorta' catch him but don't have 100% proof and he denies it, or maybe just 'smell a rat' but can't prove it beyond a doubt. This gut simply doesn't sound 'beyond a doubt' trustworthy. Honestly, I'm NOT one to give up on a marriage easily, and ended up staying in a bad marriage for a long, long time. But now that I'm older and wiser, I'd say take a good hard look at what you've got, and without cleaning it up and 'fixing' him (he won't change) -- decide if that's the marriage you want. Then decide. If it's not the marriage you want, End It! You've got no kids. You don't *have* to try to work it out. Unless you see concrete proof that he's really, really changed, I honestly wouldn't believe it. And new passwords is certainly NOT proof that he's changed. If anything, it's proof that he hasn't.

If the tractor didn't come with the owners/operators manual, it would be well worth your time to obtain one and read it. There is a lot of very valuable and essential information in there that will help you in the long run.

hmmmm...makes ya wonder though why get rid of a tractor with only 25 hts on it if it has such a great reputation as some have stated here....hmmmmmmmm!!!! good luck with your new-used tractor and hope that it is the only problem you have with it....BTW---what reason did they give you for selling it?

All current Craftsman tractors will mow in reverse but only if you put the key in a special position as indicated.

My first thought was along the lines of what Bighagrid stated. I am always suspicious when someone is trying to get rid of a perfectly good tractor with super low hours.

Both with less than 50 hours and in like new condition. They were traded for larger z-turns, the J-D guy would not go back to them.

It is called ROS (reverse operation system). Just turn the key back one position. I find it hard to remember to do this when I first start the mower.

The salesman should've gone over the operation of that LT upon delivery , which is what a dealer would've done . Typical of the crap customer service at Sears these days .

Where in the post did he say he brought it from a saleman? Again, inexperience and JD bashers that don't own one butting in making there outragous statements. "which you would of brought a JD" WE know why due to the price differences Like three time as much For a X500 which probably equals the features. I see JDs in the paper every week with less than 50 or 100 hours on them for sale so the crap about low hours don't hold water either.

I assumed that the unit was a return to Sears . But since charger70 didn't say where he got it from who knows ? My mistake if it wasn't . Bait and switch tactics , being charged full price for items on sale , and no nothing sales personel are just a few of the things I've encountered at Sears over the past few years . Clearly they're not the store they used to be .
