nope, according to the extreme environmental wackos cows off gassing is a major source of GW as well as human contributions. so the off gassing of decomposing things also contribute. think of the heat the pile creates, that has to be warming the atmosphere. according to most of the nutjobs, basically the only cure for GW is to kill off all things that breathe.

Just as there are many causes of global warming there are many solutions and a compost pile is one, but it is not the ultimate solution.

"Cure" and "contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions" are two different things but it's a hopeful train of thought. A lot depends on how the composting is done.

If I drive long distances collecting composting materials which I then shred with a lawn mower or leaf blower, then turn the pile with a rototiller and keep the temperature at 140-160+F for as long as possible, I'm surely contributing to global warming, not helping mitigate it.

You can't cure global warming with compost when the primary issue isn't cows or fertilizer. It's people. Many loud "environmentalists" only cherry pick the information. They tend to support only the research they agree with from a particular scientist. The fact is that most scientists whose research supports that global warming is perpetuated by man agree that it is primarily due to population being 2 times (and that is the most conservative figure I've read) what it should be already and it's growing. Anyone seen the planet earth series? I like the last disc, particularly. It finally poses that question. Why are "environmentalists" purposely avoiding mentioning the REAL problem and admit no changes will occur until that is finally addressed and fixed? It doesn't matter if we don't like the answer. In the last hundred years populations have soared because humans started saving too many lives. Despite all the war, death, and destruction modern medicine has saved more lives than would have been lost if nature had run it's course. Don't get me wrong. I support this 100%. But, religion has influenced so many and continues to influence so many into making policies or deny new policies that can balance the life saving by avoiding too many births. Not just one religion. Most of the major ones are the primary reason people avoid any contraceptives and sex education. In fact, both are illegal or strongly opposed in some areas solely because of religious beliefs and those areas are consequently some of the poorest, overcrowded, disease stricken areas on the planet. Many parts of Africa and India come to mind. Instead of implementing controls, they just tear down more trees to grow more food to support more people, use more fresh water to grow this food, drill more oil to run machinery to grow and ship this food, destroy more land to dig more coal to make more power to make more fertilizer to grow this food, and continue down a path to economic destruction and eventually the mass starvation that began getting just coverage earlier this year (of course, only briefly).

There are much more practical reasons to use compost. No reason to pollute the waters with fantastic information when solid reasons exist.

No.

The link refers to carbon sequestration in soil. If home composting became a serious hobby for a large proportion of the population, such that they raised organic matter levels in the soil and maintained the high levels, maybe it would have a measurable effect. Highly unlikely that would happen though. But there has been research into creating "terra preta" biochar for agricultural use with flue gases from coal burning power plants. That would have the effect of capturing carbon that would otherwise go into the atmosphere, and it would stay in the soil for thousands of years (and improve soil fertility).
