I've already sown Echinacea, lady's mantle, balloon flower, stokesia, poppy, hosta, lupine, shasta daisy, rose of Sharon, BES, geum, foxglove, gaura, delphinium, columbine and butterfly bush--so far, perennials only. I'm in north-central CT. Like you, I don't do veggies and haven't thought about annual flowers yet. From what I've read on this forum, annuals get WS'd later, toward the end of March or early April in our zone. It's okay to WS perennial seeds now because they're going to stay frozen mostly for the next two months which gives them the cold stratification period many of them require to germinate.

So far I have sown - 3 varieties of hollyhocks, 2 foxgloves, snapdragons, phlox, nigella (thanks Wendy2shoes for the seed pod ID) echinacea, sweet william, money plant, butterfly weed and primrose. In the next day or so I will sow johnny jump ups and sweet peas. That will probably be all for this year until late Feb. or March depending on weather when I'll start the tender annuals.

I have this very same question. What should I be sowing out now and what should I hold back? I bought a ton of seeds from Value Seeds and saved a lot from my efforts last summer but am ready to get started again. I am using Ocean Spray juice containers (they are somewhat square) and milk jugs - not fooling with smaller containers. I am ready to start again - even bought a hole punch and pipe cleaners to close the jugs instead of using tape - but I don't want to put seed out that it will be too early for. Thanks for pointing me to a chart or something to keep me on the correct schedule.

My first years ws I would search threads to find which seeds were sown when in my zone. Now I am more relaxed about the whole thing and follow this general rule:

For your zone: sow seeds of hardy perennials and annuals (which self sow) in the winter; sow half hardy and tender perennials/annuals closer to last frost date (these can be sown earlier but most of us wait so that they do not germinate during early warm periods as sprouts will need extra care and protection or will die off during the next freeze)

Check for seeds that need cold stratification and follow the time frame needed. Most seeds do not need cold strat.

This is my first year winter sowing too, but here are the perennial flowers I've sown so far:

Marsh Blazing Star, Purple Giant Hyssop, Starry Campion, New England Aster, Wild Geranium, Boneset, Black-Eyed Susan, Brown-Eyed Susan, Joepyeweed, Virginia Bluebells, Yellow Coneflower, Spiderwort, Wood Lily, Harebell, Penstemon/Foxglove Beardtongue, and Red Columbine.

These are all U.S. native seeds that need 30 to 60 days of cold, moist stratification.

I also already sowed the annuals Rudbeckia hirta and Tall Bellflower...my seed packets say they need 30 days of cold, moist stratification too, even though they are technically annuals, but they are U.S. Mid-Atlantic natives. Hope I didn't sow these too early...

I'm going to wait until spring to sow the French Marigold seeds I collected.

Can't say yet how well these all take to winter sowing since it's my first year in Milk Jug World, but will post an update later in the year. Good luck with your flowers too!

pippi, I sowed these today:

-Asclepias - collected from a friend's yard and a few from the Chicago Botanical Garden (a volunteer was demonstrating a wet garden. A pod of Asclepias was bursting open so I asked for the seeds. :-D)
