C/C 16HP B/S Vanguard motor problems

Some how I posted this in the wrong place so maybe I have it correct this time.

I still need help a few weeks back I posted my C/C would die when warn and under a load many of you relied "Thanks" My coarse of action a new coil and spark plugs today for about 30 minutes mower did great about the time I was starting to pat myself on my back the same old problem I did notice that fuel filter was almost empty so it is starved for fuel, new fuel pump ? My gas cap does not have vent or at least it is not obvious need ideas. MD

See if it will run without the gas cap.

Inspect the gas cap carefully. Some OEMs don't put a vent "hole" in the top of the cap. Some caps have the venting passages in the threaded area on the underside of cap. I have not ever seen a gasoline powered LT or GT that had an independant "vent hose" or "vent plug" (but I have not come in contact with every machine ever made either). The vent provision is usually incorporated into the cap because it is simple and does what it does reliably (until it clogs). In regard to your concern about the amount of fuel visible in the transparent fuel filter. The "empty" head space above the liquid gasoline IS NOT atmospheric air! It is a "head" of vapor that results from some of the volatiles in the gasoline evaporating. As these "fumes" or vapors are evaporating from the liquid they rise. Not being able to escape (because the filter and fuel hoses "retain" them), they instead form a "pressure head" which exerts enough force to displace a portion of the fuel back into the tank. Having said all that, you can't use the presence of "empty space" in the filter as evidence of fuel starvation. ALL gasoline filters will have some "empty space", even the opaque metal kind, it is a trait of the gasoline at average ambient temps. Your problem certainly sounds like a clogged fuel tank vent. Or you could have some "loose solids" in the tank that are moving around with the fuel to be caught against the tank outlet hole. Another possibility is engine overheating (due to debris or "mice nests" in the cooling fan shrouds. Try deerslayer's recommendation about running with the cap off (or just very loose). If you run it til it acts up and then loosen the cap, the engine should straighten up and act right if it was being denied a vent.

Thanks Walt You sir are a genius....I on the other hand an (expletive deleted) idiot. During the Winter I re-wired the battery, solenoid and starter and yesterday fitted the new battery. How I managed to reconnect it the wrong way round is frankly beyond me! I no longer have the old battery, I wonder if the terminals were reversed (frankly grasping at straws now!) I'm more familiar with AC motors, both single and 3 phase, Reverse the direction of 3 phase motor by changing any 2 phases. Did not know the direction of DC motor was reversed by swapping +ve and -ve. Guess you live and learn! Thanks again, you've saved me forking out for a new starter motor. Cheers Steve

An excerpt from the bulletin "APSI #: 87 DATE: NOVEMBER 2012 SUBJECT: CYLINDER HEAD TORQUE CHANGE MODELS: 210000 280000 310000 330000 OHV VERTICAL SHAFT ENGINES" "Briggs and Stratton recently changed to a new design cylinder head bolt for model 210000, 310000, and 330000 OHV engines. The new bolts require a higher torque during installation. At the same time, we have modified the bolt tightening sequence to reduce the chances of head warpage at higher torque settings. To prevent confusion, use only the new tightening sequence and new torque value when servicing both older and newer designs, including the model 280000 OHV. The following procedure will replace what is currently shown in repair manual 276781 Single Cylinder OHV Air-Cooled Engines."

We finally got the parts and the time to do the repair - only took us a month! Double checked that there were no stray bits of debris and thoroughly cleaned off the old head gasket, etc. Installed the new carb, cylinder assembly and push rod. Double-checked that the rods didn't get mixed up, set the valves to about .004", put on the valve cover with a new gasket and changed the oil. Nervously turned the key and - nothing! Checked the battery and it was almost completely flat. Hooked it up to the charger, which said it had an internal shorted cell and refused to charge it. Took it of the tractor and tried again, same result Went out and got a new battery (340 CCA), checked it was fully charged, hooked it up and even more nervously turned the key. This time the flywheel turned about a quarter turn or so and was followed by a rapid clicking, possibly from the general area of the solenoid. Tried a couple more times with the same result. Flywheel turns OK by hand. Any suggestions what to check next? And thanks again for past and future help with this. This post was edited by lgslgs on Wed, May 22, 13 at 22:31

I have 2 Vanguards, the 18 and 20 HP versions. Both have been flawless, with over 200 hours each. I have a Kphler Command Pro, with 220 hours, and it too is flawless, maybe I'm just lucky, but this is the first Kohler I ever owned, came on a Z Force 50, and I think it is just great. I would never want anything without foot controls. IMO it is the only way to go, better control when slowing around objects, and leaves the hands free for steering and swatting mosquitoes. Don't know about the new B&S engines, but they are probably good enough for residential use. I will follow this post, hoping someone amswers your question about the Pro Grades.

You need to stop guessing and isolate the problem.
You said you replaced a coil, only one?

When the mower dies when warm, will it crank readily when
you try to restart it, or to you have to charge or jump the battery?
Many of the clear fuel filters look empty while in use,
so do not fixate on that too much.
Does your carb have a fuel shutoff solenoid?
Electric pto clutch? Give some info and some model numbers
please.

Here is the things I have done so for ,soaking gas cap in hot soapy water (c/c gas cap is different than most) in fact a new one cost $25 remove air breather and made a new gasket between carburetor and air cleaner, blew air back through gas lines to gas tank (had a geyser of gas shoot out)put the a/c back on and mowed the front and back about 1 acre and no problems ran great. I mowed last Friday with my N/H finish mower and push mower after c/c quit the grass has grew more than 3 plus inches hard to keep up but I am not gripping MD
