shocked by the massive size

I was spurred on to give more Austins a try this year (I have Graham T and Compte de Champagne) and duly planted Jude,Wild Edric, Falstaff and Pat. Well, I am not at all sure that I have done the right thing. The first dozen blooms are enormous and I can't seem to smell them much! Before I bring down the wrath of the forum on my head, I do realise that first year roses may be a bit anomalous - do reassure me though....is this a case of what you see is what you get - that is, whopping great cabbages with negligible scent (apart from Wild Eddie which is shaping up to look like a good rose for me) or can I expect things to settle down next year. Honestly, on Jude and Pat, they are over 5inches across and cannot hold their heads, or even canes, up.
