Need help deciding which rose to plant...

Hi,

I need help to pick a rose to plant under a west facing window.

It needs to be tall enough for me to see it (at least 5 feet tall because my window is high) And I would like a very frangrant one so I could smell it when I open the window.

I already have fragrant cloud, double delight, Mister Lincoln, Lagerfeld and Tiffany in other places of my yard so I like to have something else for the spot... The spot is about 4*4ft.

What do you think would be a good choice?

Louise Estes can get tall enough and smells great. Beautiful pink blend.

No matter what you get, be sure that the plant isn't under the roof overhang. If it is, it won't get water when it rains. My attempt at growing a rose in a similar situation didn't work out this reason.

I'd recommend Folklore. Tall and fragrant and very pretty.

Just a personal opinion here, Sandy, but since you have already begun to master the vermicomposting and because it is so beneficial (especially for roses ;), I'd go the more worm bins route. Especially so if most of your contributions would be kitchen scraps. Tumblers are fraught with problems - I linked many of the past discussions on them below and there is also several here specifically about the World's Best one. If you browse through many of the discussion here you'll see that keeping a balance of materials - especially sufficient carbons (browns) is a chronic problem for urban composters. So unless you are also going to have easy access to straw bales and other high carbon sources, vermicomposting is the way to go. Also keep in mind that unlike vermicomposting, tumbler composting is batch oriented - load and wait till done - not a continuous process so storage of materials is also a problem just as you have right now. ;) Just some thoughts to consider. Hot Cocoa is relatively disease resistant, it may get some anthracnose (a fungal disease) late in the season, but not horrible. Synthetic fungicides are applied as per the directions on the container. Most have a 7 - 14 day cycle. Bayer Advanced Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs is popular with those here on the forum who use a fungicide regularly. Heirloom sells small plants (rooted cuttings), so they need a little extra care. They may need to be put into a little larger pot, and kept in dappled shade until they harden off. They can't be exposed to direct sunlight right out of the box, the leaves will fry. A couple of weeks in dapples shade, and gradual exposure to direct sunlight will harden them off.

IMHO, option 1 would be best. One qualifier, depending on how much you'll put into the old troy, it might be better to replace. Parts can be very pricey for those and hard to find. If all you're doing is cultivating between rows, doubt you'd need to invest in a new "big red" troybilt. Last I heard MTD (I think?) had bought them and kept name, price, and severely reduced quality. Feeding 8 people wouldn't require acres under cultivation. If you're thinking of acres and just running down the "balk" of the rows with the tiller, you'll still have to hand weed between the plants and up close. Thanks for your reply! I am curious about what kind of trim will be required between the units if I go this route. I'm meeting with our kitchen designer tomorrow and will bring subzero spec sheets, hopefully we can get an idea. Interesting that you say you like the look of them opening the same way, I'm glad! I've never seen an example but will try again to hunt down some photos. Thank you for the other suggestions as well - not sure about switching the two but I do have a little bit of flexibility and might be able to separate them. I also had another idea that struck me as genius for a moment - just get the 30" fridge and put the freezer separately under counter. Either a set of 30" drawers or a 24" unit. Everything will be panelled so doesn't have to be the same brand. Slightly less capacity but probably still sufficient given that I have another upright freezer in the garage, which is easily accessible. This would give me so much flexibility in my layout and look so much better! Then I remembered that my husband and kids consider an exterior water and ice dispenser to be absolutely essential (I could care less but they'll pull the plug on the entire reno if I try to negotiate out their water and ice!). As far as I can see, these only come on freezer units, not fridge. So now I'm researching water and ice units that I could build into a cabinet....

I checked my local nursery store. They don't have the two varieties of rose unfortunately.
I think I might need to wait until next year and get the barerooted one from online store...

For a rose not of the hybrid tea variety you could try Jude the Obscure. He is a David Austin rose with globe shaped blooms which smell like grapefruit. He can easily be grown no spray here and will fit within your bounderies, although taking up the whole spot.

As for roses under a roofline, my Belinda's Dream are doing really well under mine. Water seeps into it from the yard and I have also directed water from the gutter drainpipe into the bed with a french drain.

Planting under the roof overhang isn't the same problem here it is in other areas. Since it doesn't (normally!) rain much during the growing season here, it doesn't matter much that a winter-dormant plant isn't getting rained on directly. Believe me, even under normal overhangs, it gets wet during the winter nonstop rains. Summer? you have to water anyway.

With roses, though, plants up against the house don't get good air circulation and thus get more fungal diseases which we have plenty of anyway.

Peter Mayle is a very tall very fragrant rose. Also Aloha, which is kind of half climber/half shrub and would need some support. Mine is about 6-7ft tall and growing on a chain link fence. Both are pretty disease resistant here too.

You can't beat Moondance for height + fragrance! Were you to tell me I had to give up all my roses but one, Moondance would be that one. It is tall (over the top of my fence), with 14"-18" stems, making it great for the vase. But its fragrance is what makes it most endearing to me. You catch its fragrance clear across the patio. When it first blooms in the spring, the white blossoms are tinged slightly with pink. But as summer approaches the blossoms are snow white with no trace of pink. It blooms until frost.

I've already had a couple roses growing against back of the house under roof overhang. So I believe having another rose in similar situation (next to others) won't be a problem. I will make sure they all watered well. :)

The only problem is that I have space for only one rose!

After reviewing the roses you suggested I just wish I have more space in my backyard!!
