1964 jd 110 tranny woes

I just bought a '64 John Deere 110 garden tractor to restore. I just ran into what appears to be a major problem: the transaxle case has a big split in the bottom of it. It is also locked up tight as a drum. It is the 3-speed tranny. I have access to a 4-speed from a later model 112, and was wondering if it would be a pretty much direct swap, or should I keep searching for another tranny like what is in it? Maybe one of you would like to make a deal on one in pretty decent shape?
