rose didn't come true to what it used to be?

hello! I have a strange question. I have a Jackson perkins (I think I spelled it right) rose bush and I've had it planted for a couple years now. I don't know the name of the rose but I do know that the flower is supposed to be rather big and multicolored. When I bought it, it had pink,orange and yellow all on one flower. Well it didn't do much growing last year so I didn't worry about pruning it since it didn't really grow. This year there are canes coming all over the place and they are VERY long and it had all kinds of flower buds on it. But to my dismay when it bloomed the flowers were not formed all the way and the roses are not at all the color they are supposed to be. They are a deep red looking color and the flowers are pretty small. What can I do to fix this rose bush or can it be fixed? Did I mess it but by not pruning it? If so how do I prune it and when is the best time because I don't want to kill it. Thanks to all help and sorry for this LONG story! ~Jamie~

Most roses we buy are really two varieties. The part with the roots is a rose called Dr. Huey and the top part above the lump where it was grafted is the rose variety on the name tag.

If the top part of the bush dies, Dr. Huey takes over. It is just as you describe your new red rose, and I will put a link below to a description, with a photos tab for more pictures:

Are there any canes left that are NOT new, long, etc. that look different from the new ones? Are there any blooms left that are not the new red (Dr. Huey, I agree) rose?

The only way your rose can be "fixed" is to get rid of Dr. Huey, but unless you have some of the original rose left that's not much help. The Dr. Huey new leaves tend to be reddish, or green with a sort of red outline.

Once you have identified which part is Dr. Huey, and which part is the original rose, -DO NOT CUT OFF THE Dr. Huey canes! You need to dig next to them, until you find the place where they are growing out of the main trunk of your original rose (this will be below the "lump" described above, which is called the "bud union". The hole needs to be deep enough so that you get below the place where Dr. Huey's canes are coming off the trunk. Then rip them downward until they rip off the trunk. If this does not work you can make a cut along the side of the trunk, taking off the Dr. Huey canes. The important part is to be left with just the original trunk, with NO bits of Dr. Huey canes left. Then cover the hole up again with dirt, tamp down, and water. They I would feed your rose, and hope that it recovers.

Many Dianthus in zn 7 Maryland are going to have a relatively short life span. The humidity and clay soils does them in, although I don't think they are long lived in the best of circumstances. I believe in some cases cutting them back severely is thought to help them regrow and stay perennial, Margery Fish in We Made a Garden saying that they need "drastic cutting." But the usual way is to root cuttings periodically, if you like a variety. I've already lost a couple vintage varieties that died out after 2-3 years. (they were from Digging Dog nursery, which is a good source for those...they are probably more perennial in NorCal.) Plant Delights was selling a couple varieties they said persisted in the climate of the SE, I can't remember but I think "Itsaul White" was one of them.

Thanks for sharing that Ron. I did not know any of those stories. They all touched me, and they made me think of many other stories there are out there. I travel a lot on my job and in pursuit of my other passion in life; trout fishing. I see men and women in uniform in almost every airport I travel to, but I particularly see many on my trips to Charlotte. Some of these folks are going "over there" (or getting ready to) and a few of them I've met were coming home. I never go by without letting these people know that many people here at home, whom they have never met, care deeply about them, worry for them, wish them a swift and safe return, and thank them for their service. I hope these people never ever want for their fellow Americans respect and concern. And I hope that if you are reading this that you will reach out to these people when you see them in your own life, shake their hand, thank them for the job they do, and let them know in some small but sincere way that you care. You'll be doing that person and yourself a great deal of good in the process.

Thanks for the ideas. I could go crazy with orange roses apparently! I think I'll have to rule out Amber Queen which does look right but I think this plant has been in the ground longer than the 80s. The previous owner thought it had been in since the greenhouse was installed in the late 50s or early 60s. The classy fence post is newer. :) What makes a climber a climber instead of something that was pruned funny? Aside from the obvious trunks, this one doesn't put out any long branches. But it's had so much "shaping" I can't tell.

I took cuttings from trimmings of my one and only Provence Lavender that I had cut back to almost to the base in early spring. I just poked them into the ground at the back of each of my new potager beds. The mother plant has sprung afresh with tons of new branches and will be covered in blooms in a few weeks, but the cuttings just sat there and didn't seem to be doing anything. Still, I continued to water them every day unless it rained. I checked them two weeks back while I was weeding and they didn't seem to be doing anything, but they had not dried out, so left them alone. Two days ago while I was weeding the parsley and beets I saw a stem sticking up from the back of the beets. Upon closer inspection I discovered that it was a lavender plant and it was a bloom stem! I hurried around to the outside and saw that of the 34 little cuttings I started with, I now have 28 rooted lavender plants! A good number of those little darlings have bloom stems and will bloom! Yi-ha! I checked the three Hill Hardy Rosemary cuttings and they have rooted as well! Cool Beans! Just shows to go you (wink)...that you lose some...and sometimes...you win some! ~ sweetannie4u

Or spade the whole thing up and start over with a new rose. Might be easier.
