Midsummer garden pics

Not too much going on this time of year in terms of bloom display (outside of "Annabelle" hydrangeas, which are alsways the stars of my yard this time of year), but thought I share some pics of what has bloomed in the past few weeks:

One of my "Annabelle" bushes in late June (before flowers fully open):

"Black Magic" elephant ears and "Super Elfin Blue Pearl" impatiens in pottery (I love that pot, and the EE complement it beautifully):

Your garden is just lovely. And, I especially like your elephant ear in the large pot. I never thought about putting one is a pot. I'll definitely do that next year! Thanks for the inspirations.

Sounds good to me! I did visit there this spring and bought plants labeled 'perennial,' but when I researched them at home, they turned out to be not hardy in zone 5. At $5-8 a pot, that ticked me off a bit. But, the blooms are quite unusual and I'm enjoying them so far. I may pot them up and bring them in for the winter.

Some Mid-summer stunners in my garden (not roses!)

Limelight is a wonderful plant. I cut several for a bridesmaids' luncheon and they were so beautiful, the groom's mom asked to borrow them for the rehearsal dinner. Then they were again used at the wedding reception in the 2 ladies' powder rooms. Finally, one of the decorators took them home for a baby shower she hosted at her house on the Sunday afternoon after the wedding. How's that for staying power! I just noticed that plants are putting out new blooms today! I highly recommend Limelight. Buff

Cori Ann, that was a hilarious story, I could not stop laughing! By the way, I posted some pics of TRM climbing over an arch on your post, hope it can help in answering your question. By the way, I also saw you ordered Figaro Panarosa - you will looooove that rose - it is one of my favourites with very little thorns (I have it espaliered on the fence between Claire Rose and John Claire). Please update us later on how it is growing in your garden! Beth and Cynthia: Acropolis is very pretty! We don't have it here but I wish I could see it in real life. Koko Loko is not in commerce here either but I obtained one plant from Ludwig (I actually had two but one did not make it). I rarely see the brown colouring on it but I love the grey tones as well. I do however wish I could get a rose with the same colouring in a nice old fashioned shape. I will try to post some more photos soon but will do it on the rose gallery :-) Liezel

A wonderfully laid out garden mxk3.
I adore that pot! If I wern't an upstanding citizen I might pinch it and add it to my own terra cotta collection ;-)

Potting a Rodgersia, what a clever idea. I always wanted one, but could never find the space; potting it up might be a good option. What kind of container do you have it in? And what do you do with it in the winter?

I can tell . . . a true gardener lives there! Nice healthy plants and nice combinations. The black magic EEs are a terrific combination with that pot.

christinmk: It's in a wooden half whiskey barrel. Sooner or later I'm going to have to re-pot because wood eventually rots and I've had that old pot for years - not looking forward to that chore. I push the pot up against the house over the winter, and barricade it with bagged leaves (three sides and top), it's too heavy to take up those stairs and into the garage. Then in the spring I use the bagged leaves to mulch the beds.

I love the elephant ears in the pot too! Gorgeous - what an interesting design, and I love that you underplanted them too. I have never been a big fan of elephant ears, but displayed like this I LOVE them!

Very lovely! I sure do miss my old annabelle hydrangeas! Love those! (I now have full sun and deer). Your bunny's cousin lives at my house. Your gardens look so welcoming.

Molie: The hosta is "Halcyon". It's looking a little wimpy this year....

What kind of fern is that in the 4th picture?

Do you buy new elephant ears every year, or do you overwinter the bulb? If you overwinter the bulb, can you tell me how to do that?

You have an eye for design - very nice photos. :-)

Gardenfanatic: That's an Ostrich fern. It usually is fuller, but I had my siding done in June and some stuff got trampled. I put a big cardboard box around that one, and the weight of the box broke a few fronds. Oh well. Ostrich ferns are beautiful, very lush.

I usually end up buying new EE every year. I've tried overwintering the bulbs but I don't seem to have the right conditions for that - crawl space isn't cool enough, and the rot in the fridge (too moist). I keep trying, through.
