Craftsman lawn tractor

I seek info: I have a Craftsman lawn tractor with a noisy and loose shaft where the ;arge rear tranny pulley is attached. It feels like the bearing is worn. This tractor is sort of old. Engine very good!

Don't have the specs at hand. Its a 6 speed, with a Vanguard engine. Silver in color.

I just found the paper with the specs on it!

Model:917.254860. Serial no. 0406935 024887

I don't feel like dismantling it right now, but what i want to know is if parts are available, and must i dismantle the tranny to do it? (Which i want to avoid, at all cost!)

There is about 3/16 inch play at top of shaft. I thought the black plastic pulley (idler) was bad, but not it. And one mower deck spindle is shot, too. Probably be better to junk it, with all it needs! Battery was bad, too!

Any help will be appreciated!

you should be able to go into the sears.com site, click on parts and find blow-up diagrams as well as determine if the parts you need are still available and if so at what price.

A Vanguard isn't original to that machine.
422707 opposed twin is.
5 speed Dana model 4360-56 $480 at Sears.

we are having the same issue on the same model as jchin34.. when we are going downhill/or on a slope the mower bogs down and starts to act like it is going to stall.. but if you put the clutch in when it starts doing that then you can "save it" from stalling. It revs really high for a second but then you can continue to mow until you are going downhill or on a slope again. But if you don't put the clutch in when you hear it starting to bog down then it will completely stall on you but start right back up with no issue. We have tried replacing the deck belt (which really needed replaced anyways), the ignition switch and the fuel filter which none of them solved anything but it did make it mow a little bit better. Everyone is saying that it could be the safety switch on the seat and to bypass it with a wire. Do you think this could be the same issue? & has it done it since jchin34? We are both only about 150lbs that use the mower so im sure our weight shifts when were on the hill/slope.

Well , I would think to the ignition switch , Red is Power (fusible) Green is Ground Potential . You will find the origin some where between the Ignition Switch and the Battery where the male ends plug into your female connectors .

Sounds to me like an electrical issue as it runs for 30 seconds for each key movement. Check the connections and wires from the key to the coil, as well as the coil. It also shouldn't run while in the Off position, leads me to believe there's a short somewhere. Alternatively, IF they key position does something with fuel injection to dump more fuel, that may play a role into the fuel system potentially being the culprit.

Possible the starter solenoid is not disengaging after starting, and is drawing too many amps? Does it seem like the starter is disengaging after it starts or does it keep cranking?

Thanks for the info! I'm going to reccommend to the owner that its going to cost more to fix it than it is worth! And, its the light gray model, and i think old enough to vote!
A friend sold the tractor to them about 4-5 years ago, for I think $350, and they have a very large yard to mow!
Engine runs well, but the cost of the other parts makes replacing them prohibitive, i think!
On another note, i just hauled home (for a friend) a very old JC Penny riding lawn mower that he wants me to restore as much as possible! (But--not too much cost!) A gallon of simple green ought to help in cleaning up years of neglect! And a gallon of paint will help, too. So, when the rain stops today, i can get to work on it and several projects out in the shop!

I don't know if the states is the same as here in canada. But I have noticed for some stupid reason people love to buy craftsman. Up here you are buying a lawn tractor of the same guy that sells you cloths so one has to wonder how much this guy knows. Not to mention has he ever been on one. so my vote is selling it repair it keeping it scrap it .

You can pop that transaxle apart pull all the bearings and replace - 4 to 5 hrs labor to accomplish if you have the tools and know how to use them.
Bearings available could be matched at your local bearing supplier - most towns of over 5K population with and couple of factories has a bearing supply house - look under bearings in yellow pages if you are unfimilar.
All input - output bearings and internal bushings can probably be had for under $25 for that transaxle.
The question is 4 to 5 hrs shop labor at $60 to $80 per hr.
At that rate $240 min. to $400 max. labor plus parts, so whats your time worth?
