Just got a rose bush...

Hi All,

I need your help! (little history first) I dear friend of the family who died 5 years ago use to have a beautiful flower garden of all kinds of flowers. She had 10 green thumbs and 10 green toes for that matter. No one has taken care of it for years. I think she let it go in her last years as well. There was this 100 year old rose bush. In June it would bloom the most beautiful deep red roses that you could smell for streets over. I went over to her house just to check on things and everything was over grown with weeds and flowers. Her rose bush was surrounded by all sorts of things. So I got permission from her family to dig it up and take care of it. I transplanted it to my front yard in an area with good drainage. The bush is droopy now. Here is were my question comes into play:

What can I do to make sure that this bush lives and thrives in it's new home? I really don't want this rose to die and will do whatever to keep it going for another 100 years.

Dude, your rose is a little shocky.
Not surprising.
You need to keep her REALLY watered for the next several days, and you may have to cut her back.

If you DO have to cut her back, you will want to cut back to a place where new growth will emerge. So you want to find pruning instructions.

Right now, keeping those roots wet is important.

You might also want to take some cuttings and try to root them, just in case.

I haven't done this but suggest you take your hose and wash it off. If you happened to do it on a hot day you may have burned some leaves. It may shed a few leaves and pout but I doubt it'll die. Water as usual but don't fertilize until you see some new growth.

thanks for your response, I guess I should have named my thread something different, like I've planted now, did I do it right? so with what I said I had done, would you have done things differently? I did add good soil anywhere there was an abundance of clay, (which really was only one or two holes I dug out, the rest seemed pretty good soil, cant explain that one) also I did make sure the holes were dug wider and deeper and the soil was broken up good to allow for good drainage. I went out today, and one of the plants that had a bud on it had bloomed, maybe they are right at home already!!

Albas, gallicas and centifolias do well in zone 4, but these do not repeat. The alba Kognin von Danemark is hardy and disease free (all of the albas are). Rosa gallica versicolor is wonderful. The damask Mme. Hardy is nice too. If you want a repeater, portlands like Compt de Chambord do well. I've heard nothing but praise for Rose de Resche (I never grew it). I had Compt de Chambord in Wisconsin and it was cane hardy for me and repeated. The damask perpetual Salet has some repeat too. The hybrid perpetual Reine des Violettes was pretty cane hardy and repeats too (but subsequent flushes of bloom are not as wonderful as the first one in June). It does have some tip damage at the ends of the canes. Another HP that is nice is Baronne Prevost. It should be sprayed regularly with a fungicide and the crown should be covered just in case you don't have decent snow cover.

Hello! I just got my rose bush from one of those ship to your door flower delivery companies for my Birthday. I have read a lot of the comments and see that there is little chance these guys surviving, I still want to try as it was a gift! The pot it came in was pretty small and all the buds were dying and some of the leaves too, so I decided to repot it. With some advise from the internet I repotted it the best I could. Now i feel like it’s dying in earnest. I think I’ve been over watering it so I will hold off until it dries now, but I’m wondering if there is anything else I can do? I have a northerly facing apartment that gets sun for only a couple of hours in the morning. I took it out today and basically set it in the stairwell where the sun was setting to get more sun for the day. The leaves are mostly wilting and dying with a few spare yellow leaves here and there. Also there are some of the stems that have turned brown and seem very hard. Should I be trimming those back? I trimmed all of the dead leaves but I’m not sure if the stems are supposed to be turning brown like this? Pictures are below! Thanks for all of your help!

So water a lot and prune back. Got it. I will update when I get the chance.

Also Dude, how much you cut it back really depends upon the size of the bush. Having just gone through a very traumatic experience you may wish to cut it back at least half to give the roots a chance to re develop. If the roots develop the top will follow and although it will probably take a little time at that point you'll be in business.

And the rose doesn't have any disease or insect issues right? That's something else you might want to evaluate now if you haven't already.

Oh, and to add to Kate's good advice, don't be surprised if it doesn't do a lot of blooming or growing for a while.
Maybe even the rest of the year.
It's going to have to grow roots, before it can do much up-top.

hey, Dudeinthegarden and all experts here, I am thinking is this odd but I could swear that dilute half-strength sea tea may do wonders for transplant shock... I am a total newbie to roses and gardening, but when I had to rescue my winter traumatized canker-filled tree rose, I started feeding it 1/2 strength Garden-ville Sea Tea because there were absolutely no leaves-only tiny startup buds and within 5 days I could tell a HUGE difference I had dozens upon dozens of new baby stems and real leaves, I couldn't believe my eyes and I have pictures (before and after) which show this huge transformation... Likewise my first attempts to plant my potted roses via Karl's technical know-how method I had a few accidents with (no thanks to my clumsiness, and one that I did make a perfect preparation with the pots, my boyfriend accidentally lifted it before I had taped it for lifting, so that part of the falling dirt tore out a chunk of the roots). But all three I gave that dilute strength within 5 days span for 2 weeks and all are doing amazing. No sign of shock and continuous growth... Will that dilute sea tea help Dude's ancient transplanted rose bush?

My dilute strength was 2 TBS. per gallon instead of the 4 TBS.
