How long before I play 'Taps' for Boule de Neige?

I have Boule de Neige that grew fine all last year in a pot (grafted, not own root). I overwintered it in the garage with 24 others. It seemed to be doing fine in the pot outside this spring. I planted it out a few weeks ago, and the canes have turned a sad shade of not-green, not die-back, just..the nice green receding from the canes slowly all the way down to the last few inches. The last bit of green at the bottom of the last cane disappeared today.

So.

I'm assuming it's dead, or nearly gone. How long do you let them sit before you *know* they aren't going to pop back out from the bud union? I need to reorder a new one if I know it's really over for this one. I loved that rose last year.

I don't know the answer to your question, but want to empathize since I went through this with my 50 or so indoor orchids since moving out of my house in California. :(

Can answer your question specifically but I would think 4 weeks maximum for me ... at the end of it if nothing happens slice into the graft bud and if it brown with no white it dead ... they are for me.

I am on my third grafted Boule de Neige. First one did not make it through winter which can be excused but its the only bourbon that never has with winter protection. The second new one died within two months of planting so winters out as an excuse. Planted my third 3 weeks ago and so far okay even under yesterday's snow ... I don't know whats up with this rose but it not unusual as I am also on my third Amelia Gaveraux but this time I got a large strong one and I am hopeful - same vendor.

I had another of the sisters from the same cross, Mme. Francois Pittet, in CA., where it grew very well, stayed at about 4' tall, and produced flowers spring, fall and a few in summer. Any rose produces larger flowers when moisture increases, but with Mme. FP, the difference was startling. In dry conditions, the flowers were pretty little doubles similar to polyanthas. After a good rain in autumn, all of a sudden, I was seeing large petals like those on St. de St. Anne. I had another of the same lineage, Marie Delmar, in NY. It did not survive its first winter, despite protection but had NO blackspot at all, even into fall. Breeders looking for BS resistance and hardiness might want to work with this group. One parent, Sappho, was said to be a Damask Perpetual, so the group should have some hardiness already. Mike Lowe was growing some of the group in Vermont; I think I heard he made some kind of elaborate structure to put over his more tender roses for winter. The one type of rose I ALWAYS wait several years to evaluate are cuttings I root myself. They are by definition own root, and teeny tiny. I almost shovel pruned one once - it was a "mystery rose" from our neighborhood. In the first 4 years it grew 12 feet high, but never ever bloomed, not even one flower. I asked for expert advice, and was told to feed it, and wait. Low and behold, the following Spring it was covered with the most beautiful roses - huge, transluscent pale pink blossoms, nodding down from above - just gorgeous. It turned out to be the hybrid gigantica Belle Portugaise. It blooms first in my garden, along with the banksaie lutea which is next to it. Turns out the pale pink and the pale yellow look fantastic together, and both roses are now HUGE, so they put on quite a display - people think I planned it on purpose, but it was really an accident. Now I wait until a rose is full size and blooming before I make any decisions about it.

Dinglehopp, I strongly suggest you email Pamela. Like I said, I don't remember now how I came up with her name, but she didn't have a Boule de Neige listed as being available. I just asked--do you by any chance have one? She answered that she had a small one going and thought she could send it to me in the later fall (I was writing in the early fall). I explained that in Kansas, we waited until spring to plant our new roses, and she wrote back that was even better and she could promise a good-sized one for sure for April. John, I got my MFK from ARE and I know it is the real thing. It is wonderful! Father Jerome spoke so highly of SdPN, so I got one from Rosepetals last November 2017 but that one turned out to be my no ID pink. I ordered another one from Rosepetals, and it got here a week ago and I am sure this time because it had a dried yellow bloom on it, that it is SdPN. I think I read somewhere about RU sending out a mislabled SdPN, so I did not order mine from them, but a mixup happened anyway. RU is where I got my General Gallieni, La France, Comtesse Festectics Hamilton and Comtesse Emmeline de Guigne. They do seem to be a great company, as is Rose Petals. I too have never seen these roses before, so it took me awhile to realize mine wasn't what I had hoped for and ordered. Now, I'll have to find a new spot for the new SdPN, because the no ID pink is in his spot next to Niles Cochet. If my no ID is MFK, that will be great because she looks good anywhere. Poor SdPN, he lost his spot.My MFK from ARE.MFKMy no ID, (not SdPN) rose from RPs, which is a year younger than my MFK or more, since ARE sends out older plants. What do you think?

Interesting, riku. I'll watch it and probably put it on my reorder list for next spring. Maybe I'll try for an own root. Anyone know if one exists? Pretty sure mine was from Pickering (who I have the best luck with, for grafted bare roots).

I'm really sorry to hear that you lost it - I'd assume it's a goner. Have you considered growing it on its own roots? It's quite vigorous - mine has grown from "little squirt" to "mondo shrub" in 3 years. Perhaps it would overwinter better?

The first bloom of the season opened today, in case a nudge would help. :-)

Mine is in my second spring. It bloomed it's fool head off a couple of weeks ago, even after the easter freeze, ahead of everybody else. She's resting now, and putting out more of the lovely leaves. I love this rose, even without blooms, it's quite cute.

Everyone needs a nap after hard work. LOL!!!

Well, I went and *really* looked at it today, and there's a tiny bit of green, about 2" long on one small pencil-sized cane that I missed, so all may not be lost. But I've usually never had a rose go down that far and recover.

Hopefully she's strong below ground...
