Craftsman LT1000 Shifting Problem

I have an LT1000, 917.272751 with a six speed manual transmission. With the

engine turned off I can shift to any gear, start the engine and drive. With the

engine running it won't shift out of the gear. Any suggestions or help would be

greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Remove the deck so you have a good unobstructed view of the ground drive belt system. Have a helper sit in the seat and push down on the clutch/brake pedal while you examine all the linkages in the mechanism from below the frame.
You are looking for worn or loose pivots, pins or anything that can limit the travel of the components that put enough slack in the ground drive belt for the transmission input pulley and shaft to become "unpowered" so you can shift.
Have you also noticed the clutch engaging at a lower pedal position when you try to get moving from a stop? That can also be a symptom of the same issue.
If you have recently changed the belt and did not use an OEM spec belt there is a chance the belt is a fraction too short.
Basically, something is causing a bit of power to be applied to the belt when the clutch is pushed down.

I did replace the drive belt earlier this year and it worked fine for several mowings. With the brake/clutch depressed the drive belt is not moving. I will check for ant worn components.

Looks like you'll need diagram reference numbers 101-106, doubling up on most of them. Once you have the parts, this should fasten in place under the deflector chute without removing the chute. I need help with my Lt 1000 as well the model number is 917 271920 not sure what year is it but my issue is that the axles won't spin when I put it in gear. It won't go forward or backwards it used to before I opened the transaxle to install the axle locks or whatever is called the ring that holds the axle in place and prevents it from sliding out. After I put everything back together it stopped working. There was this one washer that fell off when I first opened it and I had no idea where it belong and to be honest I do not know if I put it in the right place.

I would first Check the pre-filter, if its dirty clean it and knock any dirt you can get out of the paper filter. pull the spark plug, check the gap, clean it and reinstall it. You may want to change the paper filter if alot of dirt come out. Next buy you a can of carb. cleaner. follow the instructions on the can to clean you carb as david suggested. If that don't help then it you will probably have to take the carb off, apart and clean the small passages inside the carb. Most likely it's just gummed up some from setting over the winter months and following the instructions on the can of spray carb cleaner usually will ungum it. Hence the name gumout! All of the above is annual routine maintance and the older the engine gets the more often you have to do it.

Well, now that we know for sure the problem is not related to the deck..... When you had the carb apart, did you check the operation of the fuel solenoid to make sure it operates fully when it is supposed to? You can check this using a 12 volt power source (tractor battery). Ground the fuel solenoid body to a metal surface of the tractor and touch the fuel solenoid wire to the battery positive cable. The plunger on the solenoid should "pull in" about 1/8" to 3/16" and stay there til you disconnect the hot wire or the ground. If the plunger does not move, you might nudge it with your finger. It should pop out when you take away the 12 volt source. It might be a good idea now to go ahead and check the valves, but if it is a problem whith the valves causing this, I don't think a simple adjustment is going to be the answer. In the process of checking the valves, you need to turn the engine by hand with the valve cover off and watch both valves as they open and close. If one valve seems to just barely move to open (compared to the other valve), you may have a faulty camshaft. There have been reports of camshaft lobes wearing on certain of the 31 Series B&S engines.

Applied power does not mean there is enough power to cause things to actually begin turning. Maybe the word "drag" would be a better fit. The belt is dragging against the crankshaft pulley with enough friction that the transmission is TRYING to turn the gears inside, but not enough to actually turn them, because the brake/clutch pedal is also operating the brake, which is why the drag can't actually spin up the transmission.
Another thing to check under the tractor is to make sure that any "belt keepers" that might be in place near the belt pulleys have not gotten bent or out of place which could prevent the belt from gaining enough slack when the clutch is pushed down.

I am buying a replacement belt from Sears. We'll see what that does.

that tractor will shift even if on high rpm and moving a co mmon problem is people do just that they shift on the go and it breaks the internal gears eventualy locking it in nuetral
