Suggestion for skinny rose that is disease resistant

I am putting up two sections of lattice screen that are 4.5ft wide and 6 ft tall with an entry in between. One will have Felicia growing against it but I need a rose for the other side. I need a rose with a similar habit to Felicia - skinny. Eventually it should not get wider than 4.5 feet or much taller than 6 or 7 feet.

I am kind of lost on what to put there. I have been looking at some bushes used as climbers but most seem too vigorous.

I don't spray and need something that will be very disease resistant. The only color I am trying to avoid is true blue red - it just does not match with all the pinks and peaches I have going in this area.

Does it have to be remontant? I planted "Chloris" (an alba) in a narrow spot. It's still a baby, but very healthy.

I have a narrow bed next to my driveway and property line. Among others, I planted the hybrid perpetual Mrs. John Laing. Big fat pink blooms, fragrance, and so far no disease problems. This is its second year in my garden. It gets 5-6 ft tall and is only about 3 ft wide.

Both really good suggestions. I didn't really realize there were rose societies, so I will have to check. Thank you so much! There are nurseries around, but, I also know that some of the folks working them aren't always out in the yard with every particular variety of rose. We have another rose bush (not climbing) that has been suffering terribly with very extensive black spot (the old owner planted it under a birch tree, and it gets shade pretty early in the day). I've sprayed, and sprayed and sprayed. It's just not a good spot for the poor thing. I will be removing it in a few weeks and deciding whether or not it is salvageable. Since I will be planting the new rose in a much more sunny (most of the day) spot, that is also near some edible currant plants, which I grow organically, I would prefer to not have to spray anything on the rose if I can help it, as I don't want it wafting over to the fruits.

Prairie Harvest is a nice yellow that will die back to the ground and come back vigorously for me every year. No disease, but the thrips love it. In the sun, it will fade to a chalky whitish light yellow. There is a new yellow knockout this year, but I don't know much about it. No, I'm not talking about Carefree Sunshine. Molineau is a nice yellow that nicely survives my Chicago winter with protection. A good bloomer, with nice fragrance Topaz Jewel gets BS and is not as hardy as other Rugosas, but survives in my garden with no protection. Last year, I had to cut it almost to the ground, though. TJ grows at akward angles, so is best to grow in a closely planted group. Perdita is pink in my garden. Not at all yellow for me. RU sells a yellow sport of Tamora called Lovely Child that has worked well in my garden. Here's a pic Julia Child is floppy. Strike it Rich isn't really yellow. Think Cantalope. I grew it this year and really like it. Not much fragrance though. I have grown Livin Easy and like it a lot, so Easy Going should be a good one. Lemon Spice is my favorite Yellow. I protect it and spray it, so it probably doesn't fit your criteria. But, if you want a non stop bloom machine for cutting and sniffing, Lemon Spice is the answer. Gets kind of tall and lanky. Jude the Obscure is winter hardy for me with minimal protection, but not really yellow. Apricot. Great smeller, though. I always check the recommended roses list from the local rose society -- a good place to start. I recently read an article that said newer roses are bred for higher disease resistance and longer bloom. Much as I love my Joseph's Coat climber, I think there probably are better multi-color new hybrids out there. I also love Intrigue but it gets leggy for me. The winner for us is Margaret Merrill. It has bloomed almost continually since I put it in the ground in Nov 2004. And I do mean continually -- it has never been out of bloom for more than two weeks at a time, and in total is in bloom almost eleven months out of a calendar year, barely slowing down in winter. And the fragrance is divine, true sweet rose perfume. I have been very disappointed in Gingersnap - great coral color but fades almost immediately to a boring cream; no scent. Since we get fog here and it's been a cold summer, there's no excuse for such poor color from it. Black Cherry has a very faint scent, but striking dark red color with ruffled petals more like a rugosa than a floribunda. I'm surprised more people don't grow shrub roses -- they will bloom even in partial shade, and are great underplanted with rose standards, giving you double bang for the buck. Ladies in Waiting has a medium sweet fragrance, although it makes a poor cut flower. Electric Blanket has won me over because it is simply the toughest, most floriferous little bedding rose ever, and even makes lovely mini-bouquets. The most stunning rose I have ever seen was given to me by a friend who has to jealously guard her roses from ravenous deer. It is Tabu -- a really classic florist's long-stemmed, strongly fragrant, velvety dark red hybrid tea. Tabu and Double Delight are the only hybrid teas I would consider as "must-haves" in the garden!

The armature of the "Enigma" can be wicked, excellent for pulling knit hats off for instance and it is not a small plant either - but its habit varies and, as always what you will experience depends on the total combination of factors at work in your particular situation. This variety IS consistently clean in this area, but with many others what you will find in reading about results gotten with them is that there is no true consistency. Fungal strains mutate rapidly and vary from one location to the next, plant nutrition has also been said to play a role in fungal infestations of roses. I've noticed kinds not usually problematic in the ground here with nice infestations in nursery pots, where they may not have been kept adequately fertilized (here this seems to be the rule rather than the exception, at least at retail outlets where they often seem to want to minimize the money spent on the stock before it sells).

Nahema might fit the bill...it's relatively thornless and smells great.

I thought Felicia could grow to be 7 feet wide? I have her myself and have tried to allow a lot of space.

Sorry, yes I would like a rebloomer. I also forgot to say this area faces southwest with full sun from about 10:30am to about 7:00pm

Mrs. John Laing is a beauty! I forgot about the hybrid perpetuals. I have yet to own one. Reine des Violettes was on my want list for a while until I heard about all the blackspot she had locally. I need to do some more investigating into the HPs.

Nahema is nice too. I like that cupped bloom and being thornless is a plus since we will be dragging the trash cans through the open entry next to it.

Odyssey, I am not sure. The two I have seen growing around here were both straight growers no more than 4 feet wide, though about 7 feet tall. The other side has a little bit more room so hopefully she won't get more than 5 or so feet wide.

The great house eater new Dawn is grown on a trellis at The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the base is no more than 4 wide and the top even narrower. It's only the result of training/pruning and keeping the plant to 3 canes. It requires extra work but pretty much any climber can be kept undercontrol. They have also done this with Cadenza, City of York, Viking Queen, Veilchenblau a number of ramblers and Zeus

Odyssey3, yes, we will. The lattice is being installed next week and I am looking forward to putting the roses in the ground. Don't you just love the scent of Felicia?

Labrea, WOW, I could not imagine keeping New Dawn at 4 feet wide. I have it down at the bottom of my lot growing against a 4 foot tall iron fence. It's on it's third spring and it sends out crazy canes 8 feet out. I don't mind a little trimming once a year, but I don't want to have to keep anything in bounds.

Cadenza is one that I also bought when I bought Felicia (at Chamblees last weekend). It will be replacing a Don Juan and Tropicana that are located against a 6 foot tall wooden fence (no more testing HTs for me - too much blackspot). I am hoping to keep it within the 12 or so feet wide.

I should say that behind the rose I am looking for, there will be another section of lattice that will be about 9 feet wide (the whole thing is L-Shaped). In this section, I am planning to plant Buff Beauty.

Georgetown Hybrid Perp. Also, Queen Elizabeth is narrow. She can get to 7', but stays slender, blooms all the time, and is quite resistant.

All I know is that my Felicai was always round, not skinny, probably 7x7 feet (with prunning). At the end of season it can be bigger.

Well, darn it. I may have to rethink. The side that Felicia is going on is against a fence, creating a corner. I may be able to move her over a bit, into the corner, to give her more room. I will have to look at the area and decide.

Looked in to Queen Elizabeth and it's not disease resistant here.

Anyone in North Texas have any HP that does not get hit by blackspot real bad? They seem to have the right type of growth habit.

Nahema is the standout so far, but would cost me a pretty penny to get because my only option is ordering from Rose's Unlimited.

I may have to just go with something that does not reach the top of the lattice - say a 4 footer.

You know what Patricia, that may be the one. I remember hearing that it grows straight up. Plus it's an Earthkind Rose which is supposed to be disease free around here. And the color will look great with the other roses in the complete bed (Felicia, Buff Beauty, Maggie, Gruss an Aachen, and Pat Austin) And I can get it from several nurseries in the general area.

What about Compassion? That wants to grow rather upright and skinny for me so far...

If my roses were mature, I could offer more ideas.
