Can I use regular Hydraulic fluid for my gt235 transmission?

My 2003 John Deere GT235 Transmissions fluid is low, and I cant find the manual anywhere. So I went down to HD and Lowes,as the closest JD store is >1 hr away.

They dont sell the JD HY-GARD Transmission Fluid, but I did see 1 gallon of Hydraulic fluid. Can I use this? If not, what do people recommend for Tractor transmission fluid?

I have a 2001 GT235 with the K71 transmission, and here's what the manual says:

"Use John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD (J20D) transmission oil to reduce transmission noise.

This machine is equipped with an internal wet disc brake transmission. Use only Low Viscosity HY-GARD (J20D) transmission oil. Do not use type "F" automatic transmission fluid.

John Deere Low Viscosity HY_GARD (J20D) transmission oil is specially formulated to provide maximum protection against mechanical wear, corrosion, and foaming. It may be used in all operating temperatures."

I don't know enough about oils to say whether there is an appropriate substitute. I looked on the bottle of Hy-Gard I have, and it doesn't say anything about any standards (like you would see with motor oil such as "SJ"). If it did, then it would be easy to figure out if there was a good substitute.

Sounds like JD black magic to me - a magical way to make sure you buy their high dollar tranny fluid. Under federal law, a manufacturer cannot require you to use their oil, etc. to maintain your warranty unless they provide it free of charge.

Chances are if you bought some Cub Cadet or Sears low viscosity tranny fluid, it would be fine since they use TuffTorq trannies in some of their models also. But who knows. If it was me, I'd wait until I could get to the JD dealer and buy some Hy-Gard so I'd sleep better at night.

If the fluid says it meets the JD spec then you are probably OK. Lots of cheaper fluids won't, however. It might not make a lot of difference in a hydro, but Hy-Gard has a lot of additives that quiet wet disk brakes and extend the life of the JD wet clutches in the ag tractors.

Personally, I have a lot of equipment with weather checked hoses and they all work fine. I live dangerously (or moneylessly) and only replace hoses when they spray fluid or leak heavy. But if you are concerned about it, just replace them yourself. Take the questionable hoses off. This will be messy as the lines are filled with hydraulic oil. You'll be able to tell if your fluid is contaminated when you take the lines off. I'd recommend having an ice cream bucket or something to catch the oil. Take the pioneer tip(the part that plugs into the tractor) off first and put the hose end in the bucket. Take the other end off and lift it to drain the oil into the bucket from the other end. On a splitter with it's own control lever, there should be 4 hoses - 2 from the tractor to the control and 2 from the conrtol to the cylinder. Keep track of where each of these go. I wouldn't worry about purging the cylinder if the oil is transluscent brown to dark brown. If it's milky, it had water, if it's chunky, the last tractor never had it's hyd oil changed and sludge made it into the splitter. Either way, I'd put the hoses back on loose with the other end in your catch bucket and push and pull the cylinder by hand to purge it. This will take a little muscle. If the splitter has it's own control lever, I'd bypass the control and hook the long hoses to the cylinder itself to purge. Don't worry about getting every last drop out. The tractor has filters and its hydraulic oil should be changed every year or two anyway. Take the hoses to an implement dealership. They will either have ready made hoses on hand or can make them to order while you wait. Since the hoses have air in them now, the splitter may not work right the first few times you run it back and forth. It'll bleed itself out shortly and work properly. When you run the splitter for the first time afterwards, you'll need to check and top off the tractors reservior with hydraulic oil. If this seems like more of a task than you can manage, then I'd take it into a professional. Good luck!

I got back to the splitter and added guard-rails to protect the filter, added a flat plate on the push guide's front vs wood wedging the rod,s end (restricting some play) and etc maintenance. I contacted the donor to Confirmed Over Kill On Fluid! The Log Splitter was Initially Manual and had grown to Hydro before I continued it. It had to be a Monster Manual Bottle Jack splitter and I'll respect it as a 10 ton with the Hydro Cyl 3.5" ID X 24" X 2" rod. Plus, due to the 4X4X.25 rail X 1" pin and adjustable wedge. I H/N found one that compares. "This Explains All I Thought About The Splitter". I felt it was originally manual with the small wheels and front handle. Except, the plate for the tank and pump were throwing me off. The Donor who is a machinist and perfectionist explains the plate that I thought was Factory added (due to how it was formed and welded). He explained the 5 Gal Hydro Fluid tank could have been 2-3 Gals. The 5 Gal tank was the easiest to find vs welding up one or using the 4X4 rail as the tank as many. I'll still test it good with 4 Gals (which has never shown any signs of heat (Why?), "at the pump's 3 GPM rate as below", plus specs below in the same range or above this splitter suggest 3.5 Gals which sounds correct. justalurker, READ what i said. the dealer IS TRYING TO MAKE IT RIGHT. we have no clue if this tranny even exhibited any symptoms prior to failure. as an electronics tech i can tell you that there are many times when something is checked, determined to be in great shape, then fails miserably shortly thereafter with no hint it was goign to happen. in our, and other repair places', business there is a saying "if it ain't broke nwo we can't fix it." so IF the tranny was showing no evidence of impending failure, then the dealer was right to proclaim it in perfect shape. sure, it was stupid to say that because Murphy just rose up and bit him in the butt. at the very least he should do what he is doign and offer to fix it for HIS cost in materials. if we sold a used product and proclaimed it to be in perfect shape, we give the customer this same option or the option to return it for refund. now, IF the hydro were exhibiting symptoms, then the dealer should pay the full amount for the repair or take the unit back. sorry that i disagree with you to an extent, but i really think that based on WHAT WE KNOW the dealer is being fair about it. if the hydro failed on teh dealer during his check out, he wuold have just sold the unit as-is for parts to someone. he never would have fixed it to sell. since he sold it and then it immediately failed, he is doing his best to make it right while not driving himself out of business.

Hello Marco, I hope your project is coming along well. I have had two Wheel Horse tractors with Sundstrand transaxels. The first was 14 years old when I got it. My Current tractor is a Wheel Horse Charger made in 1969. Both are 100% reliable. These tractors use a single forward/reverse lever control located just to the right of the steering wheel. No "cruise control" is required as the lever will stay where you put it. The tractor can be stopped by returning the lever to the middle position. There is a foot pedal that can do this. I find this very handy. The foot pedal on these tractors is on the left, Familar to me since I grew up driving a WH suburban manual with the combined clutch/brake on the left. But probably this should be on the right for optimal ergonomics. I agree with others who say that hydro is the way to go 100%. When mowing not only is it good when you need to back up or manuver, it is also very good for when you hit a thick patch of grass or have to slow down to negotiate a slope. I also use a dozer balde/snow plow and having the ability to go from forward to reverse to forward is really nice. The only real disadvantages I am aware of is the fact that hydros use more gas, and cost more. So, if you can improve the efficiency that would be good. Or maybe reduce complexity or weight. The other thing I like with the Sundstrand is they have ports for other hydraulic attachements. I wish the were brought out to some sort of common fitting (or quick fit) so that adding accessories would be a matter of modular connections versus having to remove plugs, add shimes, etc to use this feature.

I would make the effort to purchase the recommended fluid, an hour + isnÂt all that long in consideration to hours of frustration in making a poor decision. When I changed the Hydro filter on my CC GT 2542 last summer I went a bought the right products, from a dealer even if it did cost me about 10 dollars for a quart that I used about 8 onces from and I believe 14 or 15 dollars for the filter.

4. If oil is low, remove oil fill cap (B) and add John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD J20D transmission oil to bring oil level to the FULL line.

Way late to the party but anyone else looking for this info . . . you really need to use the LowVis hydro oil. You won't notice any difference at first with the heavier oil but it will eventually blow out the seal in the blade clutch and/or damage the hydro pump.

Make sure you only use the JD-20C Low-Vis oil as noted in the other posts the wrong oil will cause all kinds of problems. If you can't find the oil localy let me know and I can sell and ship it to you.

Hold on - there is a difference between J20C and J20D specs. J20D is the low viscosity spec. If you do not want to use the Hy-Gard you can use any others that meet the J20D spec. Shell Donax TDL and Chevron All Weather THF are 2 that come to mind - but, you won't find them at Walmart, Home Depot, or TSC. You'll most likely have to go to a oil jobber and buy a drum or at least a case of gallons. For me, it is just easier and cheaper to get the Hy-Gard at the JD dealer. YMMV.

Tuff Torq used to recommend ordinary 10W-30 motor oil in their transmissions - the K71 lines. These trannys were found in Simplicity and JD alike. Tuff Torq is now recommending 5W30 synthetic oil. You can buy most of it at auto parts stores, or Tuff Torq will sell it direct to you. It is pricey, but since I've changed my Simplicity over to the 5w30, I have noticed quite a difference in the low noise, and better power than I used to have.

Too quick on the typing. Tuff Torq is now recommending 5w50 synthetic oil, not 5w30. Sorry for the boo-haha.
