Mystery OGR growing in an empty lot behind my house

Can anyone give me some suggestions regarding what type of rose this might be? It is growing in some brush of an empty lot behind my house in Knoxville, TN. It is once-blooming, strong old rose scent, about 8ft wide x 4ft tall, and I believe it is an old garden rose since it is not a rebloomer and because of the shape of the buds. The size/shape of the buds is similar to Rose de Rescht, but the foliage and petals are both a lighter color than rose de rescht. Maybe 'Gros Choux d'Hollande?' Help! Thanks :)

I live about 20 miles northeast of Knoxville. Did it just start to bloom or has it been in bloom for a week or two?

Sometimes the order of bloom helps put a rose into a catagory.

(I notice the companion planting of honeysuckle. Definitely a classic combo.)

Is it in half day shade? Sometimes the amount of sunlight will affect the shade of pink that the blooms have.

Growth habit? Lots of stems coming out of the ground with short laterals and blooms on the end of each lateral or a big mass of blooms with only a few (ten or twelve) major massive woody canes?

(9b v. 10a, Sunset Zones probably between 18 and 19 for you, 20 to 21 for me) It seems your soil is quite a bit different in origin from what I've seen on line, being more of a deeper alluvium. Mine is the white shale layer of the Santa Monica Mountain formations. I water enough to keep plants alive, but not "thriving", particularly during the worst of the heat. I don't fertilize with anything other than prunings I shred and throw back on the soil surface as "mulch". I don't amend using anything, period. I avoid "organic" fertilizers due to the legions of moles, gophers, skunks, opossums, raccoons, coyotes, rabbits, rats, etc., all of which are either attracted by the organics themselves or to those which they attract. I don't need, nor wish to encounter any more "wildlife" that close to the house. Sometimes, it's a "witch" living this close to the "urban wilderness". I don't fertilize those in the ground with inorganic fertilizers, either. The soil is quite 'salty', as is the irrigation water. There has been no rain to flush the accumulated salts from the soil. Adding inorganics would only serve to intensify the "salts". I do use light, infrequent applications of inorganic fertilizer (always water soluble) to newly propagated, potted plants to replace the nitrogen they lose to watering. Being in an "extreme heat, extreme fire danger" area, I am allotted a relatively high level of "Tier 1" water use. I use, and have been using a quarter of that allotment, both to conserve the resource itself as well as to conserve the ever increasing cost of it. The areas I would normally irrigate show the reduced water consumption. I recently removed sixty feet of forty-plus year old escalonia hedge which had begun dying at one end and continued crisping and browning by the foot from the southern toward the northern end. Increasing the water to it had little positive effect, so eliminating the need, as I have done with all other plantings proving themselves "too needy", helps reduce the danger of combustion as well as need to increase the water bill. Thanks, I'm not familiar with Yolande d'Aragon, but it defintely could be it. The second pic that isn't showing is of the buds before they bloom. Hi everyone! Thank you! Jane, Oooooh, don't get me started on squirrels. I wish I could contract eagle hitmen to deal with them.... they've ruined many an orange with one bite, chewed up many succulent leaves, then spit out the leaf in disgust and do it again the next day. The bigger hoodlums are raccoons that decided the center of all my bromeliads have hidden treats. The carnage! Plant parts everywhere and, yes. Orchids and succulents thrown down to the ground. Haven't figured out how to deter these furry gangsters..... My trees....there are 3 trees sort of fighting for canopy space. A guava above the Mary Eliz B bench. A large Australian Umbrella tree that blocks the afternoon Western sun somewhat and a 20 year old Chinese Elm I am annoyed with. They have leafed out and the shelter in heat waves is appreciated, but, they all need taming. Saving pennies for arborist..... I enjoy seeing how simply growing spaces are organized, including yours'. Love how your phalie is happy in the tree! I used to have a few laelias growing on an apricot tree, now long gone. Ariel, how humid is your climate? Seems the orchids would be happy year round.

Lisa, you have so many truly gorgeous pictures of your roses, but somehow the photo I wanted to see the most, of you and your daughter (and her precious baby bump) is missing. I'd love it if you could please post it again. The purple clematis and penstemon with the pink roses is wonderful. All your clematis plants are gorgeous. They add a lot to the roses, a perfect contrast. The flowers for the baby shower are also lovely, and I'm so glad you were able to have the shower. Even if done somewhat differently it's the love that counts, always.

Could it be 'De la Grifferie'? At least around here, that pops up in old gardens a lot because long ago it was used as rootstock.

It began to bloom about a week ago...grows in full sun...In the attached link, it grows similar to Growth Habit #1 (and the rose in the picture looks alot like my rose..hmm) My house is in a subdivision that used to be farmland, and the lot that I back up to was where the original farmhouse sat (which is now long gone), but the developer never developed the lot for whatever reason...so I have a feeling this rose has been there many years. The brush that it is growing in is filled with honeysuckle and blackberries. Also it has mostly tiny prickles, but some larger ones that tend to arch downward. Can't tell if it throws up suckers because of all the brush around it. It's a mystery!

Is this rose on private property or would you be able to take some cuttings.

Many of these old roses are very easy to propagate---

It is a lovely rose and worth saving

Right now, my Centifolias are blooming. My damasks are a bit ahead of them.

The one thing that is also a variable is "once blooming". Rather often, in east Tennessee, I've seen or been given a rose that "only blooms in spring" only to find that given a bit better soil and less competition for sunlight (weeds win, you know) and rainfall through summer, that the once bloomer will repeat in the fall.

If you can get a bit of it with supporting roots and grow it for two years, you'll know if it's a once bloomer for real or a once bloomer by circumstance. (I am hoping that you might have one of the early Hybrid Perpetuals rather than a centifolia, just because our part of the country has so few found HPs.)

Thanks for everyone's help. I do appreciate it :) I am going to try to take some cuttings and put it into my own garden. I have about 80 roses in my garden, but none exactly like this one. It will be a good addition. I always laugh every year when I see neighbors take cuttings from it...apparenty it has caught everyone's eye over the years!

When you take cuttings, try some that are "Y" shaped, where a stem emerges from an older stem. Healed cuttings as well. IF those don't take, wait until fall and repeat; some OGRs are simply more successful when taken in fall.

No clue here either, and I can usually identify OGR's.
