oaks in particular .. have immature baby leaves.. which make them very hard to ID... and i will leave that to others ....

most likely you over watered it.. because your media is too high in peat..

if you dont want to make you own potting media.. look into a bag of cactus mix ....

if you want to build your own bulk .... mix at least 50
% mini chunks with what you have ...

i like to suggest a tree is as big .. if not twice as big, underground.. as compared to above... if you contemplate that for a moment.. you might come to understand how small your pots are ...

and small pots.. with too much peat.. boy .. are you making it hard to perfect water management ...

Two oaks with large acorns in my area (Georgia) are Quercus prinus (formerly Quercus montana) and Quercus michauxii. You might look at pictures of those.

never forget.. trees like a sip of water. .and then near total drainage... your gut will tell you there simply cant be enough water in the media for them to thrive...

but the truth is ... you will more easily kill them ... by rotting off your roots.. than you will with too little water..

if you were to take a pot like you are using.. and pack it with sodden soil.. it will be heavy.. and that is what many houseplants.. perennials and annuals like ... lots and lots of water ...

but if you use the right media for trees .. there will be little or no difference in the weight.. since there will be little retained water..

when i got water management understood.. trees became much easier to grow in pots ...

and in reality.. trees are not houseplants.. they should go outside... for summer at least.. and most need a dormancy period.. which they might not get indoors ...

but when you take them outside.. they will need to be 'hardened off' ... in full shade ... which also make water management easier...

so much to learn.. so little time...

I would say thats its Quercus prinus. Were you in a rocky, mountainous area?Thats were this species likes to grow.

Thank you all for your help and information. I'm very new and very young so I need to learn these things so I may pass them on to one of my kids (in the possible future) if they cared and bring about another generation of people of the plants.

Unless Q. Prinus/Montana leaves get wide indoors it looks different than they usually do. I don't suppose someone planted an English oak in those woods? I am probably wronge but Quercus Robur acorns do fit the description, long and skinny, about 2 inches long. I have 2 seed bearing Q. Prinus/Montana. I would say either of the 2 are similar, but Q. Robur looks more like it in my opinion.

Where I live Q. robur does not get acorns two inches long. One inch is more like it, but they are long and skinny compared to other acorns, that's true. But I live at the northen edge of its native area, so it might have larger acorns in places with a longer growing season.

I got this on the mountain where you can see like 5 states or something it was in that park, I forgot the name as you can tell.

Well my durable specimen tree seems like it might be dying, I got some moss and some Florida fine soil (sand with decomposed bits of dirt) and replaced the previous soil with that, the leaves are withered worst now than this morning. they're crispier. I can't loose this oak I already lost my other two to a squirrel and I can't just go back to Tennessee to get another. I need help please.

well once they get to that point they usually no longer return. Thats why it is best to plant them outside and let nature do her thing. If you are desparate for a chestnut oak then I would just buy one online...several places will ship trees to you via mail. I like cold stream farms.net

I tired and I've never grown anything from seed until those oaks, I guess I'm a little sentimental because of that milestone. I really enjoy oaks and think they are one of the most beautiful trees in existance. I'm going to try everything my young self can do to save it but you're most likely right and am out of luck. But I am part Irish.... so I might have a little luck in me. If it does go, I am really going to miss this plant. My first germinated seed and it was a beautiful oak.

dendro, seedling trees in tiny pots are vulnerable. Go a couple days w/o watering & they can die from dryness (I know).

When it comes to gardening, I don't think I did anything right the first time, and many things took several tries to figure out for me. Don't sweat losing a few seedlings in pots. The trees make more every year to collect and grow.

I have a couple nuttall oak acorns beginning to germinate you can have. I collected them off a tree at a bbq joint last fall. I don't really have any plans for them. They've been sitting outside in my makeshift "nursery" in the back all winter. Now would be a great time to send them as the acorns have just barely split open. I also have some mockernut hickory nuts sitting around not doing anything you can have, too. They have been sitting next to the nuttall oak acorns.

[so next time.. get multiples of 3 acorns.. one to try. and some to store in case you fail .. lol]

are there any buds on your tree ... right were the leaves attached????

if this is a deciduous tree.. and you grew it in the house all winter ... its not uncommon.. for it to lose its leaves ....

it took me 30 years .. without the WWW to research.. to grow tree in pots successfully.. and you are all bummed out after one try ... whats that all about ...

go to a nursery.. get 10 one gallon pots from the recycle bin ..... buy some cactus mix .... and try growing some trees outdoors in the shade this year ... and if you succeed .. then think about how to get more acorns .... to try this again ...

NEVER LEAVE A BLACK POT WITH A TREE IN THE SUN.. worse than too much water.. trees do NOT like cooked roots ....

and while you are at it.. chuck this one outside.. in full shade.. and water it properly .... and who knows.. maybe it just went dormant .. and will bud back out ...

whatever you do.. do NOT give up ... we cant let these things beat us ....

I am far from done and I got 12 acorns and only three grew (oddly enough) 2 of them were eaten by a squirrel outside so i brought this one in side. I couldn't risk loosing it to something with a brain the size of a Live Oak acorn itself. I am growing other things this is just one of many projects that I will one day fulfill. I have a dream garden of many trees of all varieties in my dream house. Oaks of all kinds big, beautiful, oaks. And on the sides I'll have a bunch of my fruity trees for my eats and pleases. I still have the oak in the pot in my room and I'm not watering it to see where it goes. If it works, I will continue to grow it. If it all dies, I can learn from it and try again. You don't learn unless you fail.

Have a look at the linked article below - gives some good information on containerized growing of oaks/nut trees, along with recommended 'recipes' for soil mixtures.
I grow hundreds each year - usually just use a mix of equal parts soilless potting mix, pine bark fines, and topsoil(excavated from beneath my porch). May not be perfect, but it works for me.

If you loose it positively, if you can wait til late summer early fall, I will have tons of Quercus Prinus/ Montana acorns to share. I have 2 trees and they seem to rain acorns from late July to late August.
