A yellow ground rose, carpet rose?

I have a slope where I want to plant carpet roses, or something else which is little care and disease resistant. I've heard some say that yellow doesn't bloom as much as the original pinks, but I'd like something besides pink. I'd be happy with white, too. What suggestions do you have? I really don't want a lot of maintenance....maybe there are other ideas, too. Thanks.

The white one isn't hardy. Mine died after two years in the same bed where Red Flower Carpet is thriving, as well as the china Mutabilis. Yellow Flower Carpet & Sunny Rose (Kordes), new last year, in another bed are doing well with only snow cover over the past winter. They both flowered well despite drought conditions last summer. They are both growing well in our long cool spring. You might also consider Yellow Brick Road which has Yellow Flower Carpet in it's parentage. If you don't mind thorns, Moon River (KORconta)white, is hardier & completely no care. An old white rose that is also completely carefree in my garden is Seafoam. It's an excellent spreader & stays low to the ground.

Thanks for your ideas. I was at Lowe's today, and the yellows were beautiful. I'd love to go for it, just hoping they'll be hardy and long living! I'll check out your other ideas, too.

I don't have either one, but I can tell you this: Rose Reds are either on the blue side of the color wheel, like 'Mr. Lincoln' or on the orange side of the color wheel, like 'Francois Rabelais' (or like a tomato). A blue red and an orange red together look pretty bad. The 'Carefree Spirit' description says 'Cherry Red' which is the blue side of the color wheel, towards magenta pink rather than orange. If you already have Scarlet Carpet, see if the flowers are on the orange side of red or the blue side, and that should give you an idea.

Don't worry. It's just transplant shock. I had the same problem last Sept when they were just planted. Now they are blooming with shinny green leaves. I have several of "Pink supreme", "white", "scarlet" flower carpets. Only one of the "white" flower carpets got a bit of powdery mildew last winter. They are such tough plants and easily to root. I dropped some cuttings to entertain my very busy toddler. Now I have several new plants!

Meidiland ground cover rose?

I had a white Meidiland--healthy dark green leaves, good growth, one of my earliest bloomers, long octopus canes, pretty OGR-looking blooms. But I had chronic thrips and/or botrytis problems with it--that wasn't the rose's fault, but I often had brown/mushy spots on my flowers that drove me nuts. I replaced it with an Austin that was better for the spot (more upright, less sprawly)--still, I recommend white Meidiland if you live in an area where thrips aren't a big problem, and you aren't a lazy overhead hose-waterer like I am. Someone with better cultivation practices than I possess would probably have it looking great. It was a pretty, fast-growing rose, lots of flushes, and was black-spot free when some of my other roses were going naked.

Drift Roses VS. Carpet Roses

I just added Drift to my collection of roses last year. I've been growing Flower Carpet roses for over 12 years and I've been really happy with them. Most of the varieties Flower Carpet that I have bloom almost nonstop from about the end of June through our first few frosts. The ones that seem to be the most full in our area are Scarlet and Pink Supreme but I also love Coral and Appleblossom even though they don't get as big. From what I can tell after the first year of having Drift roses is that they are considerably smaller roses - both the flower and the shrubs themselves - but I guess that makes sense because I think that they're promoted as being for smaller spaces. I have mine tucked in some spots between the Flower Carpets where I needed filler.
