Natanya--I planted my JC in a 1/2 whiskey barrel two years ago. Last year she only did so-soeven though the barrel was in full sun. This year she is dead. She didn't survive the winter for some reason even though I did throw some extra mulch on top of her before the freezing winter set in this past winter.
I just don't think she liked the barrel at all she never grew as vigorously as others say their JC does. And, now that she is dead, I believe 'em, LOL!!!
I want another one but I won't pot it up this time. As soon as the new bush breaks dormancy in the pot she is going into the ground.

Similar experience. I had mine in a container, it was OK over the first winter, looked OK after the second, but didn't make it. I wouldn't do it again.

I would not plant Julia Child in a location with less than 6 hours of sun. It won't flower well. Not many roses will do well with less than 6 hours of sun. Most of those roses are in the hybrid musk class (and you won't find any of those locally). Even then, skimping on the sun will isn't the way to go if you are looking for plentiful blooms.

Rose will survive in a container, BUT must NOT be left outside over the winter. They should winter over fine if put in a shed or a garage. And 4 hours is not enough sun for for Julia Child.

Well of course you can. You can pot up any roses you desire and JC is no exception. My goodness, what a question.

roseman, I was concerned with overwintering in a pot. Now I know I can just put the pot in the garage or shed over winter and then find a place for her next year in the ground.
I'm new to roses, not gardening, and each plant reacts differently to being potted rather than in the ground.

I bought a Julia Child this year, bareroot and planted it up in a large pot. I was thinking that come the fall I would plant it in the ground for the winter.
