Help with crabapple tree

Hello every one,

My hubby rescued a 6 foot crabapple tree from going to the dump,it has a good size root ball, still bound with twine. The trunk got a little ruffed up when they removed it from the ground.

we planted it tonight, and we are wondering if we should wrap the trunk with something to help it heal,or do you think it will die?

There are no deep cuts into the trunk, but some of the bark is missing.

Also, there are a couple of 2 inch cocoons hanging from the tree, not tent cat's, cacoons,I will leave these if they will become butterflies,i know it's hard with out a picture,i will appreciate any help you may offer. It is a nice looking tree and we would love to be able to save it.

Thank you,Carol
