Caldwell Pink at HD

I stumbled onto a display of Caldwell Pink at HD, 9.99 a piece. They all looked healthy and were loaded with buds. Of course one jumped in the cart.

I've searched the forum and found a post by Robert (rjlinva) where he bought one at Home Depot and it turned out to be the climbing version. I also saw that only the climbing version is fragrant? I'm pretty sure I detect a slight fragrance.

Has anybody else bought a Caldwell Pink from HD? If it's the climbing sport, not sure I'll keep it. I've been there, done that with huge once blooming polyantha ramblers: Cecile Brunner.

I went out and looked at it again, I'm starting to think it may be the shrub form. This time I didn't catch any fragrance. The tag says 3' X 3'...but zone 5...who knows. I'll have to post a picture come daylight. Looks like a grower out of Maryland.

I bought mine at HD about 4 years ago. It is a shrub, but pretty darn big in my zone--at least 5X5, I'd say. It's one of the few grafted roses I have in my garden and has been a great performer. It is the least bothered by BS of any rose I own, and I have a few of the Earthkinds. It has zero fragrance to me.

I am very fond of Caldwell Pink. This year I purchased two more and replaced some roses that have not done well for me. I will have a bed of 5 Caldwell Pinks together. From a distance the rose has almost a lavender pink glow. I do think it is beautiful. I wonder if you could find some information on HMF about the climber. Personally, I don't know what it takes for a rose to be a climber - I do not understand how and when the canes harden and climb. It is an interesting thought. It might be fun to have a sport that not many people have. In Texas it is sold by ARE. Sammy

This is a fantastic rose. I've been growing this rose since 1992. It will always be a part of my garden. Blooms all summer long. Great winter foliage. It is also one of the easiest rose I know of the root. I give cuttings of this beauty away every summer to different folks all over N. GA.

Always a controversial subject about buying from the big box stores. This said, some of my best roses have come from Home Depot and WallyWorld. Last year I purchased a Reine des Violettes, Compte de Chambord and Caldwell Pink from HD. All are real healthy and have performed well. I just bought a Tamora (Austin rose) from HD which was a last years potted rose but in good shape. Be careful about the bagged roses and try to stay with the potted ones. Ocassionally you may get a virused plant but Walmart and HD warranty their plants for one year. Some of these stores in zone 9 have already received their roses and I'm sure the stores in zone 7&8 will shortly.

Jackie, I have a bed of 5 Caldwell Pink roses. I think they are beautiful, and when they are in full bloom, they are especially beautiful. Michael Shoup at Antique Rose Emporium found it, and named it. However, the ARS says it is Pink Pet. Therefore, if we take the blooms to a rose society function, we are require to call it Pink Pet. In my opinion if I purchase it with one name, I do not feel good about calling it something else. I like to repeat a rose in a bed. I have also done this with Perle d'Or (I don't want to get up, and look up the exact spelling). Your blooms are lovely. Our zone is 7A, a perfect zone for this rose. Your blooms are lovely. Sammy

Some that I have seen stay about 2' by 2' here in St. Louis, but mine gets about 5' tall and 4' across.

By the way, Caldwell Pink is really Pink Pet, and it is a China, not a polyantha. It doesn't matter much unless you are going to exhibit it, in which case it has to be shown as Pink Pet in the appropriate OGR class.

Big here too-- our 2 yr old own-roots are approaching 5 ft. across & about 3 ft. high. What I love about Caldwell Pink-- besides the obvious that it's just a GREAT garden rose-- is the fall foliage color!

I did see on HMF that ARS reclassified it as a China, which makes it "legit" on the Antique Rose forum :) I'm usually a fan of the cupshaped bloom, but the little pompoms around the green button eye have really taken me.

Barbara, I didn't know about the fall foliage color, what does it look like?
