I don't like to go out in cold and rain, it's supposed to be hot this weekend, up to 90, so I will be outside. I've heard it's good to do planting and weed-pulling when it's rainy, but I still don't like it.

Yeah I love to pull weeds after a rain or in really light rain. They come out so easy and clean.

Funny you should ask that question today, since I was out planting in a light rain/drizzle this afternoon! Once summer arrives, it's the only time that is safe to plant here. I've planted in the evening before, and provided some shade the next day, but when the temps are above 90, even that is pretty risky. The only kind of weather I absolutely hate to garden in is the wind. Can't stand it!

Well, as a mothers day gift to my mother, I planned on doing her landscaping on Mothers Day. Well, I didn't think about if it was going to rain or not. It has been 2 years since I've tended the beds at her house. Well, as it had done for 3 weeks strait, it poured rain. It did stop for around 2 hours. But let me tell ya, When your pulling, cutting, digging, planting, mulching etc... in the rain, it is NOT FUN. I was soaked and thank goodness I have a few outfits left there to change into. I was a mess!

When I was done, It looked awesome. Ok, so I'll pull weeds after the rain and splash a few puddles... But, I'll never spend the whole day gardening in the rain.

It's a way of life. I don't mind it. A little liquid sunshine never hurt anybody, but it does help to have a rain hat, some rubber boots, a pair of rain pants, and the right attitude. Oh, and a rowboat in the winter ... for the low spots.

Gardening in a Kansas rain could be life threatening! Every rain storm we've had the last two weeks has included a prolific amount of lightning and thunder - oh yes, AND wind. So, no, I don't garden when it rains.

I do like to see what the rain has awakened in my garden the following morning, however; as well as weed pulling.

I like gardening in the rain because it isn't so hot & buggy, and I don't have to worry about sunburn. It's also easier on plants that I am (trans)planting. I have a comfortable breathable waterproof rain jacket and pants that are dedicated to gardening and other muddy or grubby work, so I don't have to deal with heavy, wet clothing sticking to my skin or getting cold from wet clothes. I also have some goatskin work gloves that don't mind getting wet and muddy - I just throw them in the washing machine.

Last summer I had to move a garden in a public spot for some construction, and it was pouring rain. One of my younger neighbors, a former student, was driving by repeatedly, hauling dirt, and finally rolled down his window as he went by and said with a smile, "Don't you know enough to get in out of the rain!" . . . So maybe my neighbors think I'm a bit nuts, but I think it's one of the best times to garden as long as I can avoid walking on the garden soil and stay on walkway, lawn, and stepping stones.

Gardening when it's warm out and it's lightly raining is one of my favorite gardening times! The whole world is so quiet and still. And popping weeds is so easy.

Yep - when I'm in the middle of something and it starts raining, I just keep going to get the job at hand finished if I can (unless it's an actual storm - that is just not safe, um....metal tools are good lightening rods....). If its raining before I get out there, though, I tend to hold off until after the rain passes, I don't enjoy getting wet. Drizzle doesn't stop me, though, I will go out there in that if I have to. Definitely agree - best time to weed is after a rain!

Yes - I've been known to do it in the snow, too! As long as it's not a downpour, I can usually get through it. However, my best buddy likes to "garden" with me, but a wet, muddy dog is no fun to clean up. So that determines how long I'm out. I am careful not to tromp on the beds too much though. Wet soil compacts easily.

In the rain or shortly after is a great time to prune flowering trees. The rain weights the branchs down so those are the ones you want to prune.

Light drizzle, yes, best gardening there is. Moderate to heavy rain, no. It just compacts the soil too much when I'm walking in the beds.

Ditto to what you said Blueangel. Hotter than Hades here in NC with temps in the 90s and close to 100 this weekend. I would much rather be gardening in the rain than the heat and humidity and lack of rain we are having. With the current conditions, you might as well be gardening in the rain since you get soaked either way.

oh yes - light rain is great in the summer - I won't if there is lightning and thunder or a real downpour but light rain has never bothered me at all. My husband, kids and I camped our entire married life so you get use to doing things out in the rain - even cooking .....

Absoluteley, in fact, I fertilize with liquid Miracle Grow whenever it is lightly raining outside. It is good since the leaves are already wet and I can make a stronger solution since it will be diluted a lot with the rain. It is also a god time to transplant or plant recently acquirted plants.

My favorite sport is walking my gardens with a golf umbrella in my pj's in the early morning before the neighbors and family get up. My kids have caught me many a time with an umbrella and a cup of coffee in the garden when they woke up.

I used to find myself being critical of the gardens and seeing weeds and plants that needed division but I must have mellowed because I'm getting better at just enjoying it. Love puttering in the rain.

I cannot stop myself from gardening in the rain. I was getting so depressed with our rainless spring because I hate transplanting anything in dry, bright weather. We got a glorious repreive in the past few days, so I've been gettin' muddy.

I garden in the rain (and snow) mostly in Fall, when I'm planting bulbs. Every year I get sucked in to buying more bulbs I don't need during end-of-season sales, and every year I'm outside in the rain or an approaching snowstorm trying to get the bulbs in before the ground freezes. But since we seldom have heavy rain here in Nevada, I continue to garden once it starts raining because I want to get my list of gardening tasks for the day done.

I don't go outside to garden if there's thunder and lightning overhead, and I'm horrible at gardening if there's thunder and lightning within seeing/hearing distance because I just get TOO thrilled and excited cheering the storm on.

I fall in the same camp as mxk3. If I'm outside and it starts to rain lightly, I continue what I'm doing. If I'm inside and it's raining very hard then I don't usually go out. I'm not a big fan of getting wet in the rain and I get cold easily. I do however love to pull weeds just after a good rain.

Yes, I do! Especially in the summer when everything is in bloom and the bees/yellowjackets go crazy around my flowers I find that gardening in the rain is the only safe way to avoid beestings. We have these teeny, tiny bees that are hard to see... don't know what they are... I hate them but would never harm them. My DH laughs at me because I often suit up in rain gear and boots, turn on the sprinkler, and garden underneath the spray to avoid the bees.

Of course, like others before me who have posted, when I hear it rumble or see a flash, I'm done!

I do when its 60 in a bit of drizzle and expected to be in the 90's tomorrow. I felt like tonight was my last chance to get so much done. I hate gardening in the heat and humidity.

Once I've started something I find it almost impossible to stop even when a downpour starts.

Last fall I was planting bulbs in front of my father's house and it was getting pretty late in the season to plant them. I hadn't anticipated the amount of digging & amending clay soil and cutting of competing roots from nearby 30 year old trees and bushes. After doing all that digging and stuff I certainly wasn't going to leave those bulbs in the bags for another day just because it started to rain...LOL. My father was yelling at me out the front door that I was getting soaked and was going to get sick or struck by lightning but I was obsessed.

I was soaked to the bone right through waterproof jacket and pants but was totally satisfied when I lugged everything back into the garage after getting those darn bulbs into the ground. Made a hot cup of coffee and sat in the garage looking at the rest of the bulbs I overindulged in buying but still felt great that the front was done.

I've been putting off getting some seeds into the ground for things like Zinnia because of other priorities.

Around 5 PM today I just couldn't take looking at them anymore figuring it was almost too late so I ventured out into the 95 degree heat and humidity and scraped up all the dirt in and around those front bulb beds and sowed my zinnia seeds... all varieties, colors and heights. I would have much preferred to do it in a light rain than oppressive heat and humidity.

Those zinnias are not going to "match" the color schemes I did in other front beds along the driveway and up at mailbox but I'm looking forward to a riot of color from those zinnias and that will make me and other people happy when they see them. I know it's not technically considered a "front yard" flower in staid suburban neighborhoods but people are curious about things I'm planting and stop to ask when they walk or drive by. There aren't many flowers around here because of deer/rabbits/gophers/chipmunks.

Wait until they see the Lychnis Coronaria, Cherry Queen Cleome and lots of Cosmos surrounding violet Gladiolus in one part of the mailbox bed. My father asked for a Heavenly Blue Morning Glory to wrap up the mailbox post so that's going to take a bow among Zing Rose Dianthus, Aegeratum, Lavender, Electric Purple Agastache and a few Pinwheel Zinnia. Another color riot but at least mostly in the same color family!

As you can see, I'm not well versed on garden design by a long shot but I'm having fun and being out there in the rain once I've started a little project, including pulling those smaller weeds before they get harder to pull, is just another example.

I'm another one of those early morning "make the rounds of plantings with coffee cup" people. Quiet, peaceful and great if a little sprinkle coming down. Reach for the little weeds, snip off dead leaves or deadhead spent blooms. Glorious time of day before everyone else is up and about.

At this point in the gardening cycle I'm delighted to see rain forecast since it means I don't have to take precious gardening time watering myself! Still getting the hang of transplanting seedlings and it's laborious process for me. The intricacy of "teasing apart" roots of tiny, tiny seedlings was something I truly hadn't understood when sowing all those seeds.

One question keeps nagging at me. I have to be so careful when watering in tiny little seedlings or they disolve into the planting hole. When it rains cats and dogs on them they look just fine the next day. Guess they like Ma Nature's watering techniques better than mine!
