craftsman 420cc model 29000 oil filter replacement

Was wondering if anyone has found an oil filter replacement for the Craftsman oil filter 951-12690 2 1/10" hgt. Purolator said that the L10241 would work, but it seems too long.

I take the old filter to a auto parts store and buy one that matches it, in size and length. The owner of the store sez it will work, and i trust his knowlege. Haven't had a blown up engine, yet. Works fer me! Rusty J.

WIX makes NAPA Gold and CarQuest Blue filters. (identical except for the paint job)
For a NAPA filter, use the last 4 digits of the Wix#
For a CarQuest filter, replace the first 2 digits of the Wix# with 85
Example. Wix 51348 becomes CarQuest 85348 or NAPA Gold 1348

thanks for the help. I just hosed it down good w some PB blaster, not real dunking, but I will get a new intake seal anyway for the old beast. Any tricks on installing the new seal? Today I was planning to clean up the carbon w a small brass brush, hoping that would descale the carbon deposits to clean things up. I found two different needle valves on the RepairClinic site I am getting parts from. I could probably try matching it visually, but the two choices are B&S part #231855S and #696136. First one is cheaper. They sell the spring compressor tool for $17 (#19347) I should probably get it or I pay the local guy to put it together for me?? Probably could use the tool again on my 10hp B&S chipper someday?? I will spring the $20 for new air filter and pre filter. Anything else while shopping?? You know how girls like to shop,lol. Thx again, determined to get the old relic going.

If this has been going on for a while, your oil has likely become contaminated with gasoline also. I agree with splicer about a defective float or needle valve & seat as good items to suspect. Even if the fuel shut-off solenoid is working, gasoline can still make it's way out of the carb and into the engine when the engine is off if the fuel system is gravity fed. I don't know what that "repair shop" did to provide a "temporary fix" but either their "fix" has come undone or the root problem has worsened. Don't forget to change the oil (and filter) if gasoline has gotten into the crankcase (smell the oil) after you get the problem corrected. The fact that it runs for only a few seconds at a time indicates that there may be a blockage in the main jet passage in addition to the problem with the float and/or needle & seat.

Let me see if I have this right. Did you re-adjust the valves yesterday? and today the opposite cylinder is not firing? Fuel related loss of "one cylinder", caused at the carburetor can usually only happen if if the carb involved is a "2 barrel" configuration(2 venturi with 2 main fuel jets). And your is that type. But............the defect causing the loss of a cylinder typically stays in the same place and you will not have a different cylinder affected on different days. Only in cases where water has become present in the tank and carb bowl will you have the chance of a water slug blocking a jet temporarily and then clearing up or the other jet becoming blocked later. I wonder if you have actually performed the valve adjustment procedure correctly. I have my own version of the procedure which explains many basics of the 4 stroke cycle that can trip up novice mechanics. E-mail me if you would care to read my procedure. Thank you, Mike, for that information. Yes, I also feel his diagnostic skills are lacking. He did replace the carbureter. Since he did that, now the mower won't start at all. He was trying to put the new one in and the plastic piece was not allowing the metal insert to stay in place right. I went in the house for a few minutes, and when I returned he told me he "found another carbureter to use instead since that piece seemed faulty". Now I'm wondering if he might have used it anyway, and maybe that's why the mower won't start now. The manual says the carbureter may be one reason a mower won't start. I have never heard of a "magneto grounding wire" before. Can you direct me to where that is located? Does anyone know if the fuel filter is supposed to fill up all the way with gas, or just be partially filled, when turning on the engine? See pic. Thank you again! Cathy

If there is physical space for the longer filter to fit, the extra length DOES NOT MATTER.
I can give you a few filter numbers but I don't know if they will work for your engine because you haven't stated what engine you have.
If you will post the engine model number and/or the Sears technical model number of the TRACTOR (find it under the tilting seat), we may be able to give you an accurate part number of a filter that will work.

model is 247.290000, the engine is 420cc like I mentioned in my posting.

There is only so much space due to the angle of the filter mounting. OEM filter is 2 1/10". If filter is 3 1/4 " long, it will hit the rear tire. 2" to 2 3/4" would work.

Bill, Yes I know, just giving the range that the tractor can handle. Really appreciate the help you all have given me. Hate to pay the rip-off price that Sears wants ($11.00).

The Wix 57035 does not fit this tractor. The diameter of the filter is to large.

I use Briggs 696854. Sears sometimes has the right one and one for a Honda will work too.

You can order MTD 951-12690 filter from Amazon $11.00 each & $5.95 shipping. I ordered 2 and only paid 1 shipping charge. Beats running around guessing.........

I have the 420cc engine and use the Fram filter it's a little larger so I just bent the frame down with a adjustable wrench , no problem , the Fram filter on sale at auto Zone $ 2.99
